SpectatorSo, this summer and such, as I’ve been more into programming and whatnot, I’ve started to seriously
consider a laptop. I’m thinking of trading in my desktop for what I can get and putting that towards a laptop, and I’m wondering what kind of price I might be able to fetch for it…
So, just to survey the field, if you were looking around at computers, what would you expect to pay for this?
System specs:
Case: NZXT Nemesis Elite
Motherboard: Intel D925XECV2
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 650
CPU Fan: Thermaltake Blue Orb II CPU Fan, Pentium 4 LGA 775
PSU: Antec TruePower 550 (EPS12V)
RAM: Corsair ValueSelect DDR2 533mhz 2x512mb kit
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce 6800 GT 256 MB SLI-ready dual-dvi
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer
TV Tuner: ATI TV Wonder Pro PCI
Modem: V.92 PCI Controllerless 56K Modem IC56A
DVD-Writer: LITE-ON DVD Burner Black ATAPI/E-IDE Model SOHW-1673S BK
DVD-Writer: LG GSA-H62LI
Floppy Drive: SAMSUNG Black 1.44MB 3.5″ Internal Floppy Drive ($8.50 newegg OEM floppy drive
)HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE 160gb SATA internal
Keyboard/Mouse (optional): GE Multimedia Keyboard and Optical Mouse
OS: Windows XP Pro w/sp2, Windows XP Pro x64, Windows Vista Business x64 (already activated them with the computer, so they can’t really be transferred)
OS (optional): name a linux
(I’d recommend Fedora for, if nothing else, TV capture, because there’s a delay in ATI’s multimedia center in windows, that makes console gaming unpleasant)I’ll try to get some pictures on here somewhat soon

Spectatorhow much you trying to get?

SpectatorWe’ll start the bidding at $500. Do I hear $500?
September 16, 2007 at 2:40 pm #26890Falcon
Spectatorpsssh… to answer NoDice, I’m looking to buy either a MacBook or MacBook Pro… the MacBook I’m looking at is around $1,600, if I can acquire more money I may go for the MacBook Pro. I’ll have to tally up how much the parts in it, or at least similar parts, would go for today and name a starting price. But hell, I’d be really content with $1,600
September 16, 2007 at 3:19 pm #26892Falcon
Spectatorsimilar/identical parts, if you grab them from newegg (where possible):
mobo – 100
cpu – 100
psu – 150
case – 120
ram – 35
hdd – 50
video – 100
sound – 130
tuner – 65
modem – 10
dvd – 30
dvd w/lightscribe – 30
floppy – 7
cpu heatsink – 45
keyboard/mouse combo – 35
windows xp pro – 140
windows xp x64 – 140
windows vista business 64-bit – 300
total on parts alone: $1,587
(and yes these are current prices of the hardware that’s in it, not what they were when i put this together or what similarly high-end things today would be
)September 16, 2007 at 9:24 pm #26910Falcon
Spectatorso, any thoughts on price?
September 16, 2007 at 9:36 pm #26912Kuros
SpectatorI’ll give you $50.

September 17, 2007 at 12:29 am #26922Falcon
Spectatorhrm, Kuros and Renton’s Big Bro are about to convince me to fleabay the parts off 1 by 1. I thought that the going theory was that the overall price should be a slim margin over parts, minimum?

Spectatori’ll give you my next 5 illegitmate children, if you’re lucky they’ll be boys
September 19, 2007 at 11:27 am #27100Falcon
Spectatorseriously, if i asked $1,500 for it, pretend you’re looking for a rig. Would you buy it?
September 19, 2007 at 11:55 am #27102rainefardreamer
Spectatorgot pics too? Heh… it seems pretty nice, but i’m not really in the market, unless it was a laptop or came in pink
September 19, 2007 at 12:56 pm #27108Falcon
Spectatorit could be made pink…

but i do need to get these pics
September 20, 2007 at 10:25 am #27186Fascist Flakes (Jagr)
SpectatorTo be honest $1500 is a bit steep, especially with no monitor and with technology from last (?) year. The only things I really see bumping up the price of your system though are the OS’s, which is a bit silly here on campus as well as for other people.

SpectatorI return, this time with pictures. I’m no super cameraman, so if you wanna see more tell me
and it runs the CS:S video stress test at an average of 82.23 fps at full settings and 1440×900, i’m trying to get a screenshot because [win]+[prt scr] fail, and “screenshot results” in the terminal just screenshotted the *edited* terminal

SpectatorMan I rock at wiring cases. You should see how awesome mine is routed.
September 20, 2007 at 10:43 pm #27254Falcon
Spectatorlol. at one point i tried running the smaller stuff behind the motherboard, or stashing it in the empty half of the drive bay, or stuff like that, but nothing really got it out of the way and still to where it was needed
in particular the graphics card connector, that was out in the middle of nowhere

SpectatorSeptember 21, 2007 at 11:28 pm #27326Falcon
SpectatorBut to be honest, some of these parts are from 2005. they were bleeding edge in 2005, but still they’re 2005 material.
So, where would you say I should start the price on this?
September 25, 2007 at 6:01 pm #27469Nickname
SpectatorWell let’s consider I just built a computer with:
amd x2 5200+
gigabyte am2 motherboard
2gb g.skill ddr2-800
320gb WD SATA hdd
20x Lite-on SATA DVD burner
evga 8800gts 320mb
aspire x-dreamer 2 case w/powersupply
for $775; so let’s reevaluate your pricing:
case: $110
motherboard: your mobo doesn’t support core 2; $50 max
cpu: you can buy an amd 3800+, faster than the p4 650 for $50 new
cpu fan: wouldn’t consider it much of a selling feature, but I’ll give it $35
PSU: its $100 new on newegg
RAM: I’ll go with your $35
HDD: ” ” $50
video: definitly old hardware at this point, maybe $80
sound: you can buy an x-fi for $50, yours is worth more like $30
tuner: $50
modem: $0
DVD drives: $25 each
floppy: $7
mouse/keyboard: GE? I’ll give it $25
OSs: $0
Ok that brings our new total to: $672; I’d say you could probably get $700 for it. But wait, my $775 machine is faster in every way… I’ll let you draw your own conclusions about that.
Sucks how fast computer parts depreciate doesn’t it?

Spectatorsure as hell does
October 8, 2007 at 6:16 am #28008Falcon
Spectatorhmmm…
now I have a reason for keeping it that may be worthwhile… I just put 2 and 2 together about this one advantage of my sound card… but i shan’t say more. In any case, either make me a *edited* good offer or else I’ll have to figure out a thing or two before i continue the availability of my desktop
October 8, 2007 at 12:26 pm #28022Kuros
SpectatorEBAY.
October 9, 2007 at 6:51 pm #28122Falcon
Spectatoractually maybe no sale… the sound card has a cool trick i need to find a counterpart to for a macbook before i sell it

Spectatorfree bump
February 25, 2008 at 4:53 am #38227Falcon
Spectatorat the end of this semester I’ll decide on it. On one hand, if I can afford my other goals in life (vehicle, food, travel, and college) easily and it hasn’t gotten a tempting offer, i’ll keep it, it’ll make a sexy server. On the other hand, if any of those become a factor, it’s gonna sell for highest offer, which I think is currently Kuros offering $50.00
February 29, 2008 at 9:34 pm #38759Falcon
SpectatorAnd on second thought, Nickname’s suggestion of $700 works. $700, anyone? If I can pull $700 then forget waiting till the end of the semester, it’ll be a done deal.
