SpectatorProposition: Grant Admins the ability to change maps in CS:S
I’ve been talking a few admins recently about this dilemma, and in short, its the lack of ability for admins to change maps that is somewhat troubling to me.
Unfortunately, as many of you know, WCU’s CS:S server is often empty.
The main reason for this, I believe, is because the map rotation does contain some maps that are less popular with most people, and the RTV function is often unavailable to the players unless a certain player count is met. To populate the server, however, we often need to shift the maps from one like, sk_3 to de_dust2 or cs_office. But since we can’t meet the numbers to actually initiate a map change to begin with, we can’t go about increasing the numbers of the server.
Now, I’m sure that some are now considering lowering the required playercount for RTV to function. This may be a good idea, but it also means that the players who do RTV are limited to a random selection of maps that the server generates. Often, none of these maps may be ones that they would like to play, or ones that would help draw more people to the server.
So, I present this proposition in hopes that the Executives of this server will consider allowing administrators to change maps as well.
I’ll provide only one additional argument for the proposal: trust.
If we trust our administrators to make not abuse their slaying, slapping, and banning powers, why not give them the ability to change maps?
Of course, I doubt that this is the reason why WCU’s admins cannot change maps. That does not, however, mean that we should stagnate. I am generalizing, but I do believe that we are one of the few servers out there that does not possess administrators who can perform said action.

SpectatorThe idea of giving admins more ability is in the system now and new abilities including this one are on the way. Just be patient and wait for the Upper level guys figure out what and what not to give the admins. So just wait!

SpectatorI feel like the dust2 button is something that could be done, but i think a changeup of the rotation to something simple and with maps we know fill the server then it’ll be ok
honestly though, once november comes it’s gonna go down again as modern warfare takes hold

SpectatorThe maps in play now were publicly decided on and unless a retard gets put in power so will the next ones.
When they ask for map recommendations, don’t do what you did the last 3 times. Next time only recommend maps you know the server populace will like, not what you personally like.
For example, I know cpl_fire sucks and I said it would kill the server. At the time people wanted it and it was put in.
The discussion on allowing admins to directly change maps has been debated over for years. I chose not to allow it because it’s a power that’s very commonly abused and when you factor in people quitting over the abuse of it you’ll end up about where you started in terms of players. RTV was put on the server to allow the general public to change the server if the need existed and until recently it seemed to be sufficient.

SpectatorWell from what i have seen the main problem is the number at witch is required to start a rtv vote its set at 8 right now so lowering that number could help .
But it would be good to give a select few the power to change a map if the need came up .

SpectatorI noticed it said the elections were on the 3rd of this month, are the results going to be posted publicly? Not sure how it works, this is a first for me.

SpectatorAnd I’m a dumbass for not noticing the post on general discussion about the meeting. So Lemm is the new CL, that’s pretty cool.

Well, MasterP, the only problem to what you’ve said is that lots of maps are great. So, sure, we can turn WCU into a popular map only server, but there is a significant amount of people who like maps like sk3. I’ve been pushing for that map to be dropped from rotation every single time a rotation vote’s come up. But, it never gets dropped.
Why?
Not because the general public likes sk3, but the fact that there is a large contingent of people here at WCU who like the map. And that large contingent can, by itself, fill the server.
So, the problem with just leaving it means that when this large contingent is not around, the server empties. But, if we do remove it from the rotation, the large contingent that really matters(since this is the WCU server, will balk.

The problem with RTV is that when the server is empty to begin with, there’s no way you can RTV out of the bad maps that are keeping the server empty. It’s a cyclical pattern.
Now, regarding abuse, I guess I was wrong.
So, you’re saying that the execs and the council leaders have such a lack of confidence in their administrators that they can’t give them the ability to change maps?
Why not take away the admin’s ability to ban, slap, and kick people as well?
Or hell, just change “admin” to “temper moderators.”
We’ll have our guys stroll around the server and calm people down when their teammates steal defuses.

I know you’ve only been here for about 5 months but trust me when I say it’ll be abused. Those that had the power on our various other servers have abused it quite a bit. If I were to get rid of all the admins I don’t trust 100% we’d be down to like 4. I trust them to do their job but at the same time I’m realistic about abuse because every admin abuses, some just do it more than others.
Regardless of what you may think, I do know what I’m talking about.

I don’t really see how any of what I said up there led you to believe that I feel you’re incompetent. I simply disagree with the fact that you allow administrators to handle bans, yet you don’t allow them to handle something like changing a map. Now, if an admin actually abuses his or her powers with something like a map change, I really have no idea why that person is an admin to begin with.
I know I’ve been here for only a short while. I’m not trying to play johnny come lately and throw a wrench in the inner mechanics of WCU’s administration, et al. Part of my bias results from the fact that I’ve seen this work on other servers quite well.
Before WCU, and during some of my time at WCU, I played a game called Freelancer, and there was a very well made mod of it, called Discovery. Now, the professionalism that I saw carried on by those Admins and Mods were beyond compare. Part of my bias for people being good admins comes from that as well.

If I were to get rid of all the admins I don’t trust 100% we’d be down to like 4.That’s probably a good idea, MasterP. Because if you don’t trust the current admins with the ability to change maps, you might as well give it to 4 and make the rest “Mods.” On top of that, now, in addition to the execs, we will have 4 extra people who can change maps.
Again, this is just me, but I don’t know why you’d allow someone you don’t trust 100% to be an admin.
