I suppose this is the right forum. IF YOU CAN FIX THIS ILL SUCK YO DI^^ Anyways, my mouse seems to be broken, or is it? I bought the mouse about 4 months ago and it worked perfectly up until about a week or two ago. Something funny, i had the same problem on my previous pc that was running XP and i ended up destroying the pc trying to fix this same problem with the exact same mouse(flashed the BIOS wrong blah blah blah). I am not exactly sure what is wrong with the mouse. The mouse seems to be dying. It will turn off them come on in 2 seconds. Although, sometimes the mouse does not come back on and i get an error saying “A USB device malfunction”. However, I dont think the mouse is broken. I tried using the mouse on my other pc and it worked good. I have also tried using another mouse on this pc and it worked. I have tried uninstalling the mouse from device manager and reinstalling. Same with USB controllers. Didn’t work. Sometimes when i did this the mouse wouldn’t install correctly. The mouse would be detected as “Uknown Device”, but oddly the driver successfully installed. Even more unusual, the mouse didnt work. I mean why wouldnt it work if the driver install was successful. I tried reformatting the PC as well, which didn’t work. In conclusion, if you are good at fixing computers please help. I WOULD SAY I HAVE A SOMEWHAT GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE PC AND HOW TO RUN IT SO DONT BE SCARED TO GET ADVANCED  , AND DONT POST STUPID SH*T THAT ANYONE WOULD KNOW UNLESS ITS WHAT FIXES THE MOUSE <_<

i was typing right as you left yesterday… the file hidusb.sys or whatever it was you had coming back… that’s not the only one. I had my mouse driver that windows had hoarded in 3 different folders

did the exact same thing yours did when i went after one driver in the one location you mentioned. the file deleted, then reappeared 2 seconds later.

    so here’s what to do.

boot into safe mode without the mouse if you can help it

use the search tool (win + f) and search for your driver’s name. you should get multiple hits.

delete them all, or at least cut and paste them to the desktop or whatever. reboot and try that.

btw, mine did that same thing… i wasn’t even running windows vista, much less vista sp1. this was in xp.

and for ppl other than tr1fe… he said he was trying to figure this out… and he had narrowed it down to thinking it was hidusb.sys

hidusb.sys is the default Windows driver for ALL USB keyboard/mouse/joystick/gamepad devices. Deleting it is not advisable but if you want to screw things up by all means continue to delete things out of the System32 folder. When Windows itself is putting files back after you delete them that means you’re doing something wrong.

I would like to assume you’ve installed the correct drivers for your mouse but you didn’t say you did. Download and install the intellipoint drivers from here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseand…d/download.mspx

If that doesn’t fix it, scan your core Windows files to ensure they are not corrupt.

Go to Start->Run. Type “SFC /scannow” and hit ok. This will take some time.

More to follow if it doesn’t help.

Generally when your getting those types of errors, its as MasterP said a driver issue, or its a power / usb port issue.

You’ve already tested the mouse on another pc and it works. The light is going off and on. Try another USB port.

If he formatted the computer and it still isn’t working I’d say it’s more of a USB issue with hardware than a USB issue with Windows. Are you using the USB ports attached to the motherboard or the ones on front panel? You said you screwed up a bios flash, I’m assuming that’s on a different PC? I’m going to go with power issue/USB hardware malfunction. Try uninstalling all the universal serial bus controllers in device manager and restarting your computer. This will force it to reinstall everything. I still think it’s hardware.

… assuming he figured it out right, my suggestion above would be the path to take.

he tried it in the front ports and different back ports too. same problem.

try mitch’s idea, sfc /scannow… and you may need the original windows install media used for your computer to copy over files when it’s done

Why are you bothering with the default windows driver to begin with?

    #45565

I am bothering with hidusb.sys because in the problem report it said the driver installed successfully, but when it tried to run it malfunctioned. now i take back what i said before about the mouse working with the original hidusb because the mouse didnt work with it either. i have tried the front and back ports with the same problems. i have tried the latest intellipoint drivers which didnt work. UPDATE** i scanned my core Windows files and the scan found some corrupt files. however it says it was unable to fix some of them. i have the log file to post but its rather long.

    Do it in safemode.

i did it in safemode and i guess it fixed everything, the core windows files that is. it didnt fix the mouse. i cant tell if it did fix the files because when it gets to 100% complete the window closes really quick so i cant read the results.

this is why i think hidusb.sys is the problem.

    problemzk2.jpg

By the way that second USB Wheel mouse optical without the yellow alert next to it is the other mouse i have plugged in and it works fine.

i was browsing through my pc’s manufacturer(dell) update site and i see that it needs an “Urgent” BIOS update. i realllllly dont want to do this to my new pc after past experiences. do u think it is necessary?

    Criticality

Urgent Dell highly recommends applying this update as soon as possible. The update contains changes to improve the reliability and availability of your Dell system.

    Fixes and Enhancements

1: Add support for new processors

    2: Improve USB subsystem operation

Yeah….. that might be a good idea.

Update all drivers from Dell (including bios) and make sure WinXP is fully updated. If there is a mouse driver in Windows Update, use that.

Some light reading that might help:

well i updated the BIOS successfully but it didnt fix the mouse. i have noticed with this mouse that it works fine if i move it very slowly. any quick movements with the mouse will make it turn off or pause(restart). im going to buy a new mouse but i would really like to solve this incase it ever happens again, which it probably will.

Susan’s keyboard and mouse are MS and they work fine. I have used COUNTLESS MS mice in the past with no problems. If its for gaming then yeah MS sux but otherwise MS mice and keyboards are just fine. question, do u think the hibernation or sleep mode could have done something to the mouse? if i remember correctly the mouse was working great then i started putting the computer on sleep mode or hibernation instead of shutting down the computer.
