MasterP
SpectatorPlanning on building a mediacenter/torrent machine that I can stick in a corner and forget about. Want it to use as little power as possible while still delivering smooth 1080p playback and netflix/hulu streaming.
Tell me what you think:

250GB Western Digital RE3 (pulled from another machine, performs on par with Black series)
Cost is $369 shipped.
Note that I won’t be using the case’s PSU so any heat complaints about it should be ignored.

There are 3 drive bays so if that happens I can easily add more drives.

Spectator1080p is like 4-5gb per, so I’d get at least a TB in there. HD’s really aren’t that expensive these days, may as well put in something larger so you don’t have to worry about it.

SpectatorForget the hard drive.
Focus on everything else.

Spectatorthe drive is terrible. need a new drive.

Spectatorlol torrents are not illegal .. you guys should know that! The stuff that they carry can be illegal but MasterP isn’t doing anything illegal.
Hard drive sucks, but knowing how these things are setup he is going to download and move the files to the NAS, so the drive wouldn’t matter that much.
Looks like a good setup, reviews are good!

Spectatoridk why you came on here looking for advice, you know what you are buying and it should be fine. I personally wouldnt buy an atom-based anything but that is my personal opinion on the matter.

Spectatori think he just wanted to share what he got. Kinda like when a man gets a new anything (car, tv, girl), he wants to show it off.

It’s dualcore with hyperthreading. Much better than the standard Atom they ship in netbooks.
Also, I just ordered this a few hours ago. I was hoping for some real feedback but all I got was smack about my inadequate size.

That’s what she said?
Also just remember that just because it has 2 cores and hyperthreading doesnt make it fast. I mean you might be looking at the performance of a mid-range p4 if you are lucky.
I dunno if you have already, but you might want to check out tomshardware’s (I know they are terrible) review of the atom 330 http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/dual-core-atom-330,2141.html

SpectatorAlso now that you have already made your purchase, I will recommend this combo (saves $30 with combo savings):
#
ZOTAC GF9300-G-E LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9300 HDMI Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
Item #: N82E16813500035
Return Policy: Standard Return Policy
#
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E6500 Wolfdale 2.93GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80571E6500
Item #: N82E16819116093
Return Policy: CPU Replacement Only Return Policy
——
of course it would not be a silent solution as there would be a cpu fan

SpectatorOk so I bought that and everything works great. Uses 30 watts with 1080p playback going.

Installed a pair of fans, with a 3rd going to be installed this week. Magnetic bearings are *edited* near silent and still push enough air to be useful.

Also looking at getting a bluetooth keyboard/touchpad.

Thoughts?
Also, does anyone know of a cheap/easy way to convert HDMI or VGA to RCA video or S-video?
