SpectatorI was actually thinking about this the other day…here’s what I have come up with.
Keep in mind that taking a team game, and making it with 1 individual winner is going to be complicated. no way around it.
Counter-strike is a team-based game, therefore this should be considered when constructing a tournament. In order to do this, I think the only way is to have a series of miniature scrims.
Plan 1
First step to making this as fair as possible is by seeding each player based on a 1-5 scale (5 being the best of the 32 people and 1 being the worst.) Since there are going to be teams of 5 players each, we would need 5 of each skill level (there would be 5 ppl that are ranked a lvl 5 in skill and so on.)
Second step is dividing the seeds evenly, so there are a 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 that make up one team. Like I said earlier, there will be 6 teams total, with 2 extras.
Thirdly, we will need to come up with some sort of rotation plan, so that you are always playing with new people, of all skill levels. (this could be the complicated part.)
Then comes the actual scrimming. I was thinking 20 rounds a scrim (10 as CT and 10 as T) with each set of scrims being on a different map. At any point, there will be 3 total matches of 6 teams going on.
The points system goes as follows:
Every team member on the WINNING team recieves 2 pts.
Every team member on the LOSING team recieves 1 pt.
The score leader on both the losing and winning team will recieve 1 extra point.
The points will be the final determination of the winner and so on.
Strengths of this method of conducting this tournament:
– those players that can successfully lead a team of 5 are rewarded the most.
– all skill levels are taken into account with this method
– this method takes a team-based game and translates into an individual winner making it easy to distribute prizes.
– this method involves a lot of teamwork, giving people the chance to play with everyone at the lan.
Weaknesses:
– this is a very complicated method and some people will not understand it.
– the rotation system might be hard to figure out.
Plan 2
This method is more along the lines of the 32 man bracket, more for pubbers and is easy to understand.
A 32 man bracket will be needed. Each player will be ranked from a 1 to 8 seed. There will be four of each seed, much like 1/2 of the NCAA style bracket. For round 1, matchups will be a 1 seed vs. an 8 seed, a 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5.
All 32 players will enter the server for round 1 on a given map. There will be a 10 minute time limit. The scores will determine who moves on to round 2.
Let’s say that Adambomb is a 1 seed and Uchida is an 8 seed. In the pub, Adambomb has 28 kills, and I have 30 kills. I move on to second round, while adambomb is out.
The map will change every round, and regardless of who is knocked out, they will still play each round in the pub. However, they will more or less be dummies, because their score is irrelevant to the competition.
Strengths:
– simple and easy to understand
– everyone is participating in every round
– true pubbers will succeed (if this is a strength)
– laid-back than other method
Weaknesses:
– doesn’t take into account death-kill ratio (which to me is very important)
– doesn’t take into account the team aspect of the game
– rewards people that can kill the most amount of n00bs, not actually come up with strategy and intelligence
Both of my methods above are essential in making the LAN fun, yet still competitive. The strengths of both of these methods is that everyone is playing AT ALL times, and those that get knocked out in the first round arent just sitting there feeling worthless. Everyone plays always, and has an important role in determining the winner.
