The PS3’s private key is now known due to a flaw in Sony’s coding of a random number generator. Sony, who has officially lost the software battle, now attempts to sue the guys who cracked thier system.

Backups are not currently working on the custom firmware for 3.55, but it is only a matter of time. This should drive them to come out with PS4 a little faster I think.

If you ever had the idea to get a ps3… now wouldn’t be a bad time.

This seems to be the most informative link I’ve read:

Interesting that instead of trying to negotiate with the guys to prevent widespread release of the cracking details they’re choosing instead to sue them.

This changes my perspective on the PS3 and once the homebrew develops further I might actually pick one up. The primary reason I haven’t gotten anything other than the Wii is that once you get used to being able to load any software or OS mod you want it’s really hard to pay $300 for a console and NOT be able to do it. It’s like switching from an iphone to a verizon freebie that has no support for 3rd party applications.

The most hilarious part is in the comments of that news posting. Lots of posters there think the DMCA is not enforceable in the EU. Sadly, it is VERY enforceable in almost all EU member countries thanks to new anti-piracy legislation and the precendents set in the attack on TPB.

Okay so i think i get what’s happened. seeing how i’m not a big tech buff, i’m not sure what this all means for sony. Now that people have this information, what (in laymen terms) can they do hack wise?

AFAIK not much at the moment.

In the short term I’d expect Other OS or some other Linux-based OS to be released sometime in the coming months along with firmware and security patches to prevent Sony from remotely detecting and removing it. Sony themselves may re-release it to keep people from “jailbreaking” their PS3’s. Expect to see piracy skyrocket and all remaining anti-piracy measures, both online and offline, circumvented within the next year. As Nintendo learned, once users can run custom-code the battle is over.

I’m surprised they didn’t fully implement their own security policy. The hardware is set up to allow much stronger security than what they actually used.

From what I’ve read… you can:

Install an FTP Server on your ps3 to edit game save files / trophies

    Install emulators for different consoles

Install a program to backup a game to your internal hard drive (but not play them)

I think there are a few other things.. but everything else is on the way.

    Update:

Waninkoko came up with his own custom firmware now that supposedly allows for backing up and playing of games. WARNING: there were hundreds of PS3’s bricked within hours of this coming out because they either didn’t install it correctly or it didn’t work for their system…

So, naturally I’m going to wait a while before I actually try this.. from what I understand most of the bricks occurred either with the slim systems or from people not updating to the stock 3.55 before installing the custom firmware (or CFW as it is commonly referred to).

EDIT: I think it might actually be the fat ps3’s that have the problem not the slim because of nand size is different. here is a list from Wankinkoko’s forums.. It’s in spanish, but I’ve been using google chrome to translate. You can also follow Waninkoko on twitter: @hackinblack

Considering the incredibly small amount of data that’s been published about the PS3’s nand I can’t say I’m surprised. The golden rule is never install a Waninkoko firmware mod until a month after it’s first released. Large numbers of Wiis were bricked in the early days as well but after a couple months of “alpha” quality work Waninkoko became the gold standard for playing backup games and downgrading firmware.

I can’t imagine why Sony would have different sized nand’s but that’s definately a common cause for bricks because the block addresses needed for critical things like the bootcode would be different.

Still, Waninkoko’s backup player has never gotten anyone banned from Nintendo’s online network (and yes they do ban) so this pretty much means Sony is boned. I forsee people swapping the tiny stock drives for 2TB hard drives.

I checked and my PS3 is one of the one’s that is said to work with Waninkoko’s CFW. I checked the model number.. I have the 320 GB slim move pack.

And I could be wrong but from what I understand the FAT ps3’s have a larger nand than the slim ps3’s. I believe it is because they were built to support hardware emulation for ps2 games, where as the slim is not.

It would appear that some people are getting console banned with the new update… I’ve read a lot of random stuff so I’m not sure yet who to trust. Apparently, the new patch disables the ability to update your console through USB.

I’ve also read that it only disables it if you are coming from a custom firmware and that you can get around it by using a USB to install OFW 3.55, then updating to 3.56 over teh internetz.

I’m not really worried though.. because naturally if you’re on a hacked console you should wait to see what happens to the idiots who update before you..

And, since the PS3 private key is known, you should just be able to wait until a new custom firmware comes out and then update to that…

It does concern me that Sony would render entire 300 dolla consoles useless on the internet though.

Why? M$ does the same thing with XBL.

Yeah I would expect it from Microsoft.. they are even worse expecting people to pay for a XBL subscription but I had a higher opinion of Sony.

And now you see why so many of us don’t share that opinion.

Man, wouldn’t it suck to have your $600 launch-day console banned because you re-enabled functionality that the console shipped with. Were it me, I would be wishing I had spent that money on some other console…

Meh.. I should be fine.. although reading through all these posts from idiots who had their console banned is making me more nervous.

There’s a tutorial that a lot of people have followed in order to get to OFW 3.56. I think I will just do that and not mess with the PS3 Hacking scene anymore.

    Update:

I was able to update to OFW 3.56 without getting my console banned from PSN or Black Ops servers. I had to follow a tutorial to clear my log and game history switching over to the stock firmware of 3.55 and then upgrading to 3.56. It was pretty easy, but I wouldn’t like to have to do that again.

It would appear that I have successfully dodged the bullet, because I have read that if they banned you it would be right after you updated.

I’m not sure how many PS3’s were actually banned from PSN or if that was just a lot of scared little kids.
