SpectatorHmmm I decided to make this thread after playing with Kellum last night and showing him some of the tricks of the trade. Ours is a pretty brutal public server from most of what I have experienced, it can be hard and discouraging on some of the new players so I thought I might point the way to some of the essentials that will make the game more bearable, and eventually even a metric *edited*ton of fun.
CPL mousefix, this is the *edited* essential if there ever was one, the holy of holies imo, nothing else out there that is legit that will help you out more than this will. You can get it here http://www.fpsbanana.com/tools/717
Be forewarned, it will affect the way your mouse moves, it will seem to move slower at first but this is because it removes any Acceleration from windows itself. Acceleration is when if you move your mouse faster it will go farther across the screen then if you slowly bring it across. This is ultimately bad for your aiming in counter strike because you won’t get a consistent grip on things, twitch 180s in response to sound and your damage ring are next to impossible without this because you probably wont turn exactly to your attacker. Last night I killed about 6-7 dudes in dust 2 tunnels, i was pretty much surrounded and reacting to sound and my damage rings, because of the mouse fix i was consistently turning to where they were based on sense. Ultimately you need to get used to this if you want to get better. It may seem uncomfortable at first, but you won’t find a pro player without it. Adapt to it.
Next up is something I find fairly handy, the CAL source config. It is pretty nifty, turns the graphics down, bodies disappear into thin air when they die, no blood splatters(surprisingly, I don’t actually depend on them anymore unlike when i first started playing, mini map seems to fill that function in well. ) Overall, I find the boost in framerate and the correct rates settings pretty essential.
If you want to use this config, open up note pad, copy and paste the following huge metric *edited*ton list of commands into it and save it as “cal.cfg”. Now open notepad again, this time all you have to type in is exec cal.cfg name the file autoexec.cfg
Now put both of these files in /steam/steamapps/username/counter strike source/cstrike/cfg When you load up the game it should work, you can check by bringing up the console.

This here below can be added to the launch options, it basically accentuates what CPL mouse fix does. Launch options can be found by clicking on the game name in the steam window, goto properties, and launch options from there.

Tips.
Set your voice communication button to something easier and more convenient then the K button. More than likely your hands will be no where near it when in the process of laying down the law and you may need to give commands on the fly in a heated situation. Personally I use the Q button, and I have my quickswitch as Alt, so I can press it with my thumb. All this is personal preference though. You may like it, but that really depends on the shape of your hand and what is most ergonomic/comfortable.
Rushing.
A big tip for rushing is to autobuy, if you are gonna go previous just press F2 and it will rebuy so you won’t have any delay in that crucial foot race for ground.
Pretty important tactically, The way I think of matches is to consider time and ground as tactical variables You have a limited amount of time to do things, also you have to think about how the enemy is going to spend his time. He is gonna spend his time gaining ground against where you spawn at. you have to rush so you have as less distance to fight till you get to the objective. This is rather important. Your life expectancy, contrary to popular beliefs about badassery, declines along with the game timer. The more time you waste, the more area you have to fight over, even if just a one or two choke points, they could be deadly, the greater chance you have of dieing.
To me at least, tactics are further broken down into two themes, one for each side.
For Counter Terrorists it is all about mobility, time, and tactical/situational reaction time. Big important example here. Bunch dumbass CTs rush Long A and get to the double doors and sit on their asses thinking the Ts are sitting on their asses, if no grenades have occured then most likely the Ts are going B, or short A, in which you should be able to hear them walking on the stone terrace going over ct spawn from the double doors at long A. It is crucial that CTs quickly appraise the situation and react accordingly, they can’t let Ts get cozy over at B otherwise it will be like cracking a safe because they will have tense, players who have just pushed through and just come off of some woop *edited*, they have a bit more confidence, you proly have less because your worthless teamates got themselves killed by the great chain of woop *edited* that the Terrorist force should be.
For Terrorists, it is all about the Great Chain of Woop *edited*. It has to keep moving, *edited*ers sit and die to death so many *edited* times in B tunnels it is not even funny. IN fact the best tactic is to spearhead your way in B bombsite without throwing nades, it will throw them off as they will be expecting nades, not a sucker punch from your AK. Along the way in whatever map their will be chokepoints, break through these *edited* quick as possible. Next important consideration is situational awareness, as the Great Chain of Woop *edited* mosies along to its destination, sneaky *edited*ers like me will try and come in on the tender flank, coming in from a direction yall aren’t moving at. While usually just one man flanking you, you can’t let it escalate such that he has played with you long enough for his homies to get in the neighborhood.
Don’t close range fight with an awp like you would with an AK/Colt as you proly don’t have the skill to mushroom tattoo someone with it at that range as it requires really good and accurate reflexes.
One last suggestion is maybe signup at caleague.com the forums there can be useful.
This isn’t directed at anyone like Flakes, Kuros, or GXTI, badasses in their own right, but rather to the new player who comes to our server, finds the steep learning curve, and needs some sense of the game. For those of you who are consumate *edited* woopers, feel free to contribute your own insights with some additional posts and *edited*.
Also, maybe make this a schticky… I dunno, seems logical. If you don’t want this post to be so *edited* big, then let me upload files with the .cfg extensions.

Spectatorfor complete newbies: this will take some getting used to at some point anyway, might as well start early. use your pistol crosshairs to get a feel for where the center of your screen is. You will need to know where this spot is like normal people need to know where to find a toilet. some guns come with a scope and thus have no crosshairs unless you are using a scope. frequently those guns will take forever to get pointed where they need be pointed if you are using the scope. and for other guns, well, learn your crosshairs. and your spray patterns. (spray patterns aren’t sequential, for those of you that know enough chemistry or molecular physics, spray patterns are more like electron density graphs or whatever they’re called that have frequently hit areas (slightly off-center) and not so frequently hit areas (dead center) )
spray and pray only works close quarters. i suggest that over long distances you squeeze off a few shots, let your gun stabilize, and fire off some more. if you need evidence, I have enough confidence to stand at a distance and you empty an entire 100-bullet para clip at me. then while you are reloading since it takes so long i may as well charge and knife you

You’ll actually find that the best button in CS for voice com is mouse4, the one on the side. You don’t have to move at all, since your mouse thumb rests in that area naturally on a popular mouse like an intelli explorer, g5, or mx518.
That config is pretty cool for most people. Looking through it, it mostly just wants the game to run faster and less pretty. The pwnasaur does just fine with everything maxed out and the pwnasaur wishes to keep it this way

SpectatorThe only thing I lack right now is a video card, although it is PCI-e and 256 mb, my previous one which was AGP was 512 mb but because of motherboard and ram issues I used this configuration, now however it is unnecessary. So I can run it with mostly everything maxed out cept I still turn HDR off cause my video card still can’t quite handle it. At least not to my standards.

Ewwwwwww. I have my voice key bound to V on the keyboard, reload/jump/etc on the mouse as it is right there at your fingertips. Voicecom on the mouse? Ewww
I may test out this config a bit later when I get my new monitor and keyboard in, which will be tomorrow >

Spectatorlol your comp is a lot more powerful than mine man, you proly don’t need it, maybe though, no idea really. It’s mostly aimed at stability and performance over graphic quality. You might find some of the stuff useful like the netcode settings, but I imagine you have those in already since your rates are kosher.
