SpectatorSo there comes a time in a man’s life where you are tired of sub par graphics and want to upgrade. Anyway I went and found a good deal (or at least i thought it was) on a 2GB Radeon HD 5970. I haven’t exactly kept up with the most up to date graphics cards, but I do like to buy the latest and greatest when i do upgrade *edited*. I didn’t even realize AMD came out with a 6990, and plan on releasing a 7000 series sometime this year. Anyway, comparing the 5970 to the 6990, is the +400 dollars more you would pay for the 6990 worth it? Should have i just waited a little longer for this years new release?

SpectatorNeither card is worth the price. Neither card is required to get acceptable framerates in today’s latest and greatest games.
IDK what you’ve been offered for the 5970 but when newegg stopped selling them they were around $600 and 6990 should be around $750.
If you actually care about what you’re throwing money at, you can get acceptable framerates, not the absolute BEST but still good enough to enjoy, with a $300 6950 or $200 GTX560.

I figured they were both overrated and overpriced, but so is the Macbook Pro, Hybrid cars, and brand named Polos and I got all of those. Yes I know, I’m a sucker, but i see it this way, it cost more, i use my credit card more, pay everything on time, and my credit score goes up. 820 pretty *edited* good score for a sucker

anyway i got it for a tad over 300 bucks. comparing just those two, is there any real difference in performance? Obviously the 6990 is better, but my question is how much better exactly? i’ve looked at some comparisons, and the 6990 runs cooler, has a lot more places to plug *edited* in, yet is slightly larger than it’s predecessor. it’s more curiosity than anything.

SpectatorDepending on the game, the 6990 is 10-20% faster than the 5970.
The 6990 uses less power and is cooler while idle but under load the 5970 users less power and is cooler. The 5970 is quieter at idle or load.

SpectatorIf you can find a 6950 that is unlockable to a 6970 (they do exist, reference only), get one of those. Otherwise just get a 6970.

SpectatorYeah the reference 6950s are a steal. Not sure if I’d buy one but the unlock “bug” is definately a game changer for that price range. Tbh, I think they did it on purpose to attract mid-range gamers away from Nvidia offerings.

SpectatorThere isnt one single game out there that the 6990 can play that the 5970 can’t… and there sure in hell is no way that there is $400 of difference between the two. You would have to be playing Crysis at 2650×1600 max settings to even see a visual difference between them. ~20% performance difference for ~130% price difference = I think you know which was the better buy lol.
