Oh Malley
SpectatorThis will be along reference of all the tips I give you for general use. These tips will work for any player, or at least should. However, sometimes there are certain circumstances where you’ll still die, or not get the kill, or what have you. This is a set of GENERAL tips. Not special case scenarios.
WEAPONS TIPS –
—Get comfortable with the entire arsenal available. Don’t underestimate the power of weapons because you simply don’t like them or you keep dying with it.
—Know the appropriate ranges for each weapon and carry weapons that will compliment each other. Such as, don’t carry a shotgun and a sword or gravity hammer. Two extremely short range weapons make you an easy target for someone who just backpedals while firing into your face. Compliment the shotgun with a mid-range to long range weapon like a battle rifle or carbine.
—You don’t always have to dual wield. Some of those single handed weapons make for deadly weapons when even single wielded. Plasma pistols, SMGs, plasma rifles, and maulers are all weapons that are deadly when used it short range situations. Fire and melee for a quick kill, even on a charging enemy.
—Well placed grenades make some weapons even deadlier. The battle rifle, pistol, and carbine all can kill with a single head shot to a wounded enemy. Throw a well-placed grenade before battle to make quick work of an enemy or two.
—Same goes for melees. Melee, jump back and fire a round into the dome of your opponent. All of a sudden, some of your mid-to-long range weapons become deadly close range weapons.
—When firing the rocket launcher, aim for the feet/ground or a nearby wall. Firing directly at opponents can cause you to miss entirely, or blow yourself up. Sometimes, shooting the ground just behind them is enough to kill them, and keep yourself alive.
—When sniping, be patient. Don’t rush your shots. Also, be comfortable with moving and aiming at the same time. Being a still sniper makes you an easy target for other snipers, or a grenade – head shot combination.
GUN FIGHTS / CONFLICT ENGAGEMENT
—When in a short-mid-range gun fight, don’t chuck grenades wildly just because you think you’re going to die. Sometimes, putting a few more extra shots into them will steer them away, letting you escape to recover your shields.
—However, if you’re running away and you have to reload, bank grenades behind you, either over your head, or turning and banking them off the wall to ensure they don’t follow. Also, keep your head down by looking down at your feet while running. It’s harder to shoot the head when they can’t see it.
—Don’t chase. Well, not directly down the path that your target takes. It’s very easy for them to trap you in small hallways or doorways with a good grenade, surprise melee, or a teammate. Go around and flank if possible. If not, let him go, or call him out to fellow teammates.
—Don’t be afraid to place some shots into people even when you know you can’t kill them. Sometimes, they run right into you weak, or prevent them from recharging your shields. Also, you never know when a team member can make that critical final shot.
—Learn to strafe. Jump up, crouch occasionally, dodge left and dodge right. Do whatever it takes for your opponent to miss enough shots for you to get the advantage.
—Closing the gap. If you’re like me and you like to get up close and personal, close the gap by circling to the left and right and jumping in. Don’t run in a straight line towards your target. You become an easy kill for a sniper to no-scope, or you may walk right into a sticky grenade.
MAP TIPS
—Learn the maps well and your limitations on them. Find the choke points, i.e. hallways, doors, limited pathways, etc. Figure out how to throw grenades there to pick up easy kills.
—Speaking of grenades, learn how grenades bank off of certain surfaces, walls, edges. Unsuspected grenades around corners can get the drop on whole teams if you throw them right.
—Watch out for canisters. One shot and you can be blown up. Or blow someone else up.
—Learn the quick jumps, short cuts, hiding places, and fast routes on every map.
—Learn the weapon and power up spawn times. Sometimes getting that key weapon can turn an entire game around.
—Learn the spawn areas. You can force teams to spawn in certain areas. It can prevent them from getting to certain areas. Or spawning behind you for an easy kill.
GENERAL TIPS
—Let things go. Getting angry will only cause you to choke more and make things worse. If something happens, figure a way around it next time.
—Communicate. Communication is the key to solid teamwork. Call out where the enemy is, is heading, what he has, how many is with him, how weak he is. Whatever is important and you can get out effectively. Prioritize it. If some guy is camping somewhere where nobody is, don’t worry about it. Maybe mention it once. But if there is a sniper, definitely call that one out constantly until he’s down. Use your judgment on your call outs.
—Play with better people. Watch what they do to get a better understanding of what they do, possibly get tips from them. You’ll naturally get better yourself. Trust me. I’m a living testament of the fact.
—Take time off to do other things. If you play 24/7, you’ll get good, but not at the rate you will if you play a couple games every day or every other day. Giving your brain the ability to relax and focus on other things allows you to prevent bad habits or easily curb them.
—Play with a consistent group of people. Forming a team and playing with them, you become better as a player, developing communication, learning how to read your teammates and what to do in certain situations. Whatever you learn with them, you can easily transfer over to other teams that you may form or join.
Also, check out the vids posted or linked in this thread. Seeing it from the perspective of another player lets you know what to do and NOT do in certain situations.
If you have questions, feel free to contact me via PM or AIM. Hopefully this tip list will help you become a better player.

SpectatorGood tips, I’ve already been working at alot of them, and I’ve seen an improvement over a couple days. Granted, not huge improvement. But the weapon tips are becoming, and keeping my mind on strafing have helped a good deal. I’ve went from always having a weak offense and an easy target to at times having a ridiculous offense at times and moderate others and a moderately difficult target. I love to get up close too. Watch out for my shotgun.

Spectatorhey…. let em learn on their own! lol. J/p. Over all some pretty good tips. It helps when nade throwing to bounce it right in front of them so it blows up in their face…

SpectatorIf you have a short-range weapon and come across a long-range weapon, should you take it? I know this would leave the mid-range wide open, but couldn’t you just use the long-range and grenades to work things out?
February 11, 2008 at 1:12 am #36445Oh Malley
SpectatorDepends on what your comfortable with. Besides, you’ve got to remember, you can carry two.

February 11, 2008 at 1:37 am #36450Akuzan
SpectatorIt would not be a disadvantage if you are able to no scope him or sneak around and kill with the short range but generally if you have a sniper and a rocket or shot gun the person with the br will win if he can consistently 4 shot. But if you play smart you can kill most people with most any weapon
February 11, 2008 at 8:22 am #36463Oh Malley
SpectatorIf he’s mid-range, either close the gap yourself, entice him to charge (by holding out your long range out, then switching to short, or backing around a corner). Or back away. If it’s a sniper your holding, you can either quick scope and snipe him or even no scope him if you want.

SpectatorLately on small maps such as snowbound or guardian when playing with a partner I just get myself into a small room with the assualt rifle and duel spikers and just blow ppl away. Is that considered camping and cheap? Like in Snowbound I just say in the middle in that little blue cave.
February 11, 2008 at 5:31 pm #36593Oh Malley
SpectatorCamping is how snowbound is played. It’s built to camp. Unless you force it to be an open field game that is.
February 11, 2008 at 5:33 pm #36594Bitey
SpectatorWhen I played that was all I did was stay in that little cave, it is really effective if you play it right.
February 11, 2008 at 7:48 pm #36608Falcon
Spectatori just go hide on a rock on top, but don’t recommend it for rocket use… only for high-speed ammunition
February 11, 2008 at 9:55 pm #36645Oh Malley
SpectatorWell, close range weapons work well on Epitaph and Snowbound simply because of the shield doors. That’s why shotguns and maulers are vital weapons to control on each map.
The only way to force an open field strategy on Snowbound is if you control the shotgun, sniper, possibly laser and some mid-long range weapons like the carbines or battle rifles. Duck into the bases when you’re weak, easily taking them down with a shotgun or mauler if they chase.
Epitaph is simply run and gun, catching people off guard and forcing them into positions they don’t want to be. Rockets are handy, but are generally good for only 4 kills, assuming you don’t waste one in a shield door. Again, shotguns, maulers, and even plasma rifles come in handy on this map. You don’t even have to camp, but use the doors to your advantage.
However, for Snowbound, the most common strategy is to camp the shotgun spawn. Be careful of the canisters that line the walls around the shotgun. Grenades can cause those things to explode through the shield door, and ultimately kill anyone close. But, have someone camp the doors to each base, and someone with some range watch the larger shield door. Last person might be ducking in and out of the hole in the middle to draw them in, or enticing people through the other doors.

SpectatorPlease. No epic poems about my all mighty-ness. Typically the main character is considered a tragic one, due to some flaw.
And I have none.
