    continued from here

so my computer showed a 0x0000007b randomly after the power on campus took a break. plus the motherboard made a steady tone within the couple minutes before the power completely went down, maybe the power got interrupted or something. anywho, that adds to the troubles i’ve had with my backup hdd… safely remove won’t do it in xp, it warns that it can’t stop the device, so i power off the computer whenever i unplug the drive. just any time i do, i’ll power off, unplug the usb hdd, and then the computer won’t post or show any video or anything. not even error beeps. to fix that i have to unplug all cables from the back of the computer and let it sit for a few minutes.

well, i figured out the 0x0000007b, at least kind of. if i mess with either the sata ahci setting, the raid setup of my one hard drive, or both, all of a sudden it will boot right into windows without the 0x0000007b error. i never changed that in the bios beforehand to trigger that, who knows. anywho, that booted windows xp, so i booted up and played some cs:s while i could (as Mjolnir, then {WCU} Falcon), and when sk3 was over i went to reboot to linux. went through the regular windows xp shutdown, start menu – shut down – shut down, and it powers off just fine. just when i hit the power button to start it back up, same as i described with the backup hdd, it wouldn’t post or show video. so i unplug all the cables and let it sit, and it boots. i go straight to linux so I can leave it running the rest of the semester, and it works all fine and dandy.

so i look up my motherboard order on newegg. after confusion with their order history list, i find it, and find that as of today it is 1 month and 10 days past the 3 year limited warranty. just like clockwork, i guess. it does appear tho that currently, in terms of linux use. it’ll continue to work just fine… i’m just a bit scared anymore to turn it off… :(

I have both an extra hard drive and extra power supply you can try if either will help you. also worst case scenario you can borrow my laptop (same one from applan)

nah, i’m easily good for academic purposes. i have this one running linux, then should it fail i have a surplus sale mac g4 desktop with linux that runs too, without any problems

All he needs to do is run chkdsk a few times, fixboot, fixmbr, and bootcfg /rebuild.

i did those and actually got windows running, once. then the motherboard itself failed to post after a regular windows shutdown.

windows is fixed, the computer still acts goofy tho

If the PC doesn’t POST for ANY reason, it’s either a bad BIOS config or bad hardware. By itself, Windows WILL NOT prevent your computer from POSTing, and I challenge you to find any linux fanboys who will tell you otherwise. The only times that Windows will prevent a POST is when you have overclocked from Windows incorrectly or failed at a reflash.

The proceedure I’ve listed has fixed several dozen of the errors like you’ve got. I believe I’ve only had to reformat on 2 of out those I’ve tried it on and those also had a corrupted registry and the backups didn’t take.

correct, that’s where i’m at now at diagnosing this. the last several times i flashed the bios i did a windows .exe flash, that could have been the problem.

all i’m saying wit dat post is that windows runs, but i’m running linux since that’s where all my stuff’s at now (alarm clock, data, internet setup, etc.) and i’m not turning this thing off to find out which of those two problems it is.

windows isn’t the part keeping it from posting, just i’m suspecting somewhere within running windows would be one of the triggers for whatever it is with the mobo that’s messing up. keyword: trigger.

    follow-up:

well, long story short, as of about 2 weeks ago either the mobo or cpu is officially screwed (not user error, either… turned computer off, unplugged, plugged it back in, powered on, and it went crazy), and given the expenses to diagnose which of the two it is, I’m just gonna migrate over to a new amd-based barebone and call it quits.
