Dead HD

So, this is on my HP HDX18 laptop I got last year.

Recently anytime the computer is moved from a perfectly flat surface, it begins a click-beep cycle, freezes, and then gives me a BSOD stating img_kernal_error (or something close to that). Usually a restart and everything was fine.

More recently upon restart I would get a “Boot Devise not found” message post BIOS selection screen, where I would have to reboot again and then the OS would boot.

Last night, I feel the HD finally died, upon several restarts, BIOS diagnostics, and Check Disc, It never started up, and never even spun.

Called HP, they concurred “yep you killed it” so I bought a new HD to replace the one my OS is on. I proceeded to open up the computer to see which of the 2 HDs I will be replacing. Upon removing the HD, I see one loose screw, tighten it, and put everything back in. Still no luck, never got past “You sir, have no OS on this” screen.

After an hour, I get an Ubuntu disc, change the boot order to CD/DVD first, and then miraculously, Ubuntu did not boot, but windows did. Then proceeded to get all my data off the computer and now its working fine.

I am legit confused. The HD was definitely not spinning and nothing was booting. Then I realized that maybe the mobo is screwed and the connection/power going to the HD is the problem not the HD itself.

Would this make any sense? I’m looking for input and help on this.

Wait, forgot to add, now when it boots up, it does the blue/green welcome screen then sits at a black screen for a good 3 minutes before it finally shows the home screen.

My roommate says I should just reformat.

Sounds like a weird case of hdd failure which happened to my hdd as well.I had a 400 gb hdd which lost the OS one day. I formatted it and used it as a backup data drive and its been fine ever since. I would just go ahead and use the new hd just to be safe. You called tech support and all they said was that you killed it? Wow thanks HP, what would I have done without you?

He had a clicking HDD and windows stopped booting. 1+1=2. Without diagnostic software, which Major doesn’t have and didn’t ask for us to give him, there was really not much else they could do.

Back everything up and do a reformat. Pull the spare HDD out when you install Windows, that way you know your install of Windows is clean and you know for a fact which drive it’s installed on.

If you’ll PM which version of Windows you have I’ll send you link to a slipstreamed install DVD I built last month that will decrease the time it takes you to get back up to speed.

I would cherish any diagnostic software or information on to get some if you have it. I believe my roommate has goodies like that so I was waiting for him to get home today before I start to pester you guys for links and dloads.

I’m pretty sure I know which one it is. I looked up the schematics of my laptop online and each site tells me its the one next to the memory. But a little trial and error can’t hurt.

Along with the HD they are sending me a brand spankin new copy of win7 ultimate.

What the hell is slipstreamed install. Just the essentials? or what?

BTW: update, comp is working perfectly fine now. I did a system restore last night and it reverted to the windows I had back in March, but it seems stable now.

Not sure what that means. I probably am going to do a reformat anyways.

It means the install DVD has all the updates through whenever integrated directly into the installer. When you’re done installing there are almost no updates needed.

Not really an issue with Windows7 but with Vista it can save an hour or two of updating.
