SpectatorHonestly that is pretty good. There are some more economical options out there in place of some of those items but nothing there that jumps out at me as “bad”

SpectatorAbout the 64-bit vista… make sure that *edited* has 64-bit drivers. it’ll be quite depressing if not. I’ve had that happen.

SpectatorIn less than one month the q6600 will be out dated crap. The new Core 2 Quads on the 45 nm process are set to come out on March 15th at around $300 bucks. They will run both faster and cooler than the current Core 2 Quads for much less money. I would not go with an x38 chipset either. Intel is pushing them because they aren’t selling worth crap. The nvidia chips are usually much nicer. Another thing you might want to look into is the 8800 GT. At around $200, this is probably the best hardware deal on the market right now. Just my opinions.

Yes and Yes. If you look at the benchmarks, that card gives the 8800 gtx a run for it’s money for $200 less. All of the newer nvidia chips support 45nm.
February 28, 2008 at 1:08 pm #38590Chris’-‘
Spectatorthe only real difference between the 8800GT and GTS, as seen here, is the GTS has 16 more stream processors, 140MHz more memory clock, and 70MHz more core clock. So, would there be any noticeable difference between the two in games like cod4, crysis, and such high demanding games?
February 28, 2008 at 1:33 pm #38593Nickname
SpectatorYes, there would be a noticeable difference in Crysis with the GTS 512 being faster than the GT 512
February 28, 2008 at 1:47 pm #38597MasterP
SpectatorNot much of a difference. Maybe 10 FPS.
In other news, there is still hope for the 680i chipsets. Nvidia has released an update that makes the 680i and 680i LT chipsets fully compatible with the 45nm Core2 dualcore processors. If it’s compatible with the duals it’s only a matter of time before the big boy chips will work in it.
February 28, 2008 at 2:01 pm #38599Nickname
Spectator2 things:
10 FPS is HUGE in Crysis, that will make the game playable for you!
Also, Nvidia already said that they were not going to support the new 45nm quads on the 680i, sorry Kip.
I would also like to mention that even though the new quads are coming out, the q6600 is by no means going to become obsolete.

Spectatoryea but newer is better for me
thank you materp and nickname

Apparently Nvidia refused to give Intel a license for SLI technology so they made the release versions of all 45nm processors electrically incompatible with the 600 series chipset. They CAN be fully compatible if Intel decides to get over themselves.
I’ve also heard of people using QX9650s in newer 680i motherboards and actually being able to POST and boot Windows with them. However most have had to disable 2 of the cores to do it and the few who have been able to use all 4 cores have had to reduce the FSB back to 1066.
Nvidia may make a BIOS update in the next year or so, if not it’s probably not a big loss. The Q6600 should bottom out in the next few months to clear them out of inventory and I doubt I’ll run into anything that’ll give it a run for it’s money within the next 2-3 years. The chip is extremely powerful for the price.

SpectatorYou know, there’s a reason they refused to give Intel SLI. Look what comes on the x38 boards…

I remember that. I was just about to pull the trigger and buy an evga 680i board then I saw that the new 45nm quad cores werent supported but the dual cores were. I was like WTF? So I looked into it and yeah the chances of a bios fix ever coming out for it are very low. In fact if I recall, nvidia released a statement saying that they would support the new 45nm quads…. on the 780i. *edited*ed off a lot of 680i buyers that were told the quads were going to be supported IIRC.

February 29, 2008 at 1:17 pm #38726Chris’-‘

Corsair XMS2 RAM comes with really good warranty support from Corsair. It’s also really cheap now with low timings of 4-4-4-12. Check out Newegg. I’ve sold so many of these things for them that I should be getting a commission check.

Look at the case, you do not need the 80MM fan as it will just add more sound and virtually no improvement in airflow.

SpectatorIf you looked at the ram you would have seen that i was getting the CORSAIR XMS2 DHX 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2, but now i am either going to get that corsair or this Crucial Ballistix 4GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
