SpectatorOk.. so in the past few days when I’ve been playing CS:S my computer has been crashing. The screen suddenly turns into a bunch of diagonal lines and freezes up. Sounds play for a couple seconds and then that stops.
I opened up my computer and there was a lot of dust in the fans.. I blew them out.. I even took out my poor 6800gt and blew out the fan in that because I think the problem is overheating. I downloaded a program from nVidea to tell me the temperature of my gpu and on a normal load is averaging about 90 degreese Celcius! It goes up past 110 when I play CS:S! I don’t know if it has been running this hot the whole time… It’s also been crashing sometimes when I’m not playing CS:S.. I’m pretty sure it’s a hardware malfunction, but I’m not sure what is going on.
It was kinda stupid but I defragged my hard drive.. I don’t think it has anything to do with that failing…
My cpu runs hot too.. about 60C…. the only thing I can think of is that it’s been running hot for a long time and it’s caused damage to the gpu? or something else in my box
Someone give me some ideas.. I’m going home tonight.. taking my girlfriend to meet my parents.. and then getting drunk and passing out at a friends house… and no lucky i’m prolly not getting laid.

SpectatorWell unless you get laid tonight, no one is going to help you with your computer problems…

SpectatorLemm – Blowing everything out was a great first step. However, go one further.
Do you have case fans? Did you blow the power-supply out? If not, get some case fans and blow the power-supply out. The latter is very important.
Next, reseat the Graphics Card securely and update to the latest nvidia drivers.
Leave the side of your PC off and load up CSS and see how it does.

SpectatorUpdate:
so I was just blowing / picking dust out of the box.. and then I went to walmart and bought some of that duster spray (compressed air).. i blew out everything again with that and I took apart my power supply and blew that out.. I put everything back together.. i have both sides of the case off right now.. (really only one would help because of the panel holding the motherboard)
while playing css now I don’t get the horizontal lines that pop up and the computer doesn’t crash, however.. it does freeze up on one image and then play the same second of sound over and over again and then it finally unfreezes and then does it again..
when i first start it up it doesn’t do this and later it will do it at least 3 times every frickin’ round and makes it unbearable
——–
i did download the latest driver and after i restarted my computer everything would work and then about the time that the nvidia control panel would load the computer would just crash and go to a black screen… so i restarted in safe mode and did a system restore to before i installed the new drivers and now the computer at least works
i haven’t tried getting a small fan and pointing it in the case… i’m getting desperate and i think that might be my next option… i can tell it helped a lot blowing all the *edited* out though it just still isn’t enough
EDIT:
also i had found out that the fan speed on my gpu was set to like 53%.. i changed it to 100% before i blew everything out and loaded that new driver; however i just realized when i did the system restore.. i lost that setting.. so i just changed taht and hopefully that will help some more now

Make sure when you install the latest drivers you have UNINSTALLED the old drivers totally and rebooted.

SpectatorI can’t help you Lemm, but I do want to flame nVidia for taking the temperature gauge reader out of the normal driver and putting it into a separate utility.
THAT WAS THE *edited*EST, STUPIDEST, FLAMING BIT OF HOMO *edited* YOU COULD HAVE DONE!!!
Can anyone tell me why these *edited*ers were so *edited*? I don’t need that many *edited*ing programs on my PC!
/flame
Thank you all and have a nice day.

SpectatorI had the same problem, and it IS your graphics card. Just Unplug it- and plug it back in,a nd see what happens.. And also.. It could be you running to many programs while using CSS
Delete your cache. Download “CCleaner” It’s great, google it, its free

i actually did take it out and blew the whole thing out with that compressed air of duster or w/e .. i had to pick a lot of *edited* out of the fan..

the thing i really don’t understand is that it has been running fine with all this dust and crap in it for so long and all the sudden when i clean everything out it still can’t take it.. I think something in my hardware has got to be *edited*ed up.. I’m not exactly sure what but if i had to guess i’d have to say it’s either the psu or the gpu cus my gpu shouldn’t be running that hot ever… and the power supply fan needs to be replaced cus it rattles/ cuts off every now and then

You can run a very serious risk of burning out components if you haven’t already.
The PSU is hooked to *everything*. It starts messing up, everything starts messing up.
As for the GPU getting hot, heh, well, too much power would cause that.
