So I had a meeting with Walter Turner today and things went well. I went to him wanting clarification on the department of student ethics rule on “gambling” which states betting on a “game of chance” which I consider video games not to be. After explaining things to him he is swaying more towards that video games are a skill based game more so than chance, thus we would not be breaking any student ethic code by offering cash prizes. He is talking to Corelli before the next LAN but things are looking hopeful for cash prizes in the future :).

We tried cash prizes before. Unless I’m mistaken, it drained our treasury very quickly.

It did. With PC we used to watch for really good deals on Amazon and GoGamer and would buy prizes months ahead of time with extreme disounts and it saved a ton of money.

    This.

And push harder for reaching out for sponsors. There’s lots of small companies out there that are willing to work to get some more business their way.

And by extreme I mean one time the TF2 winners got a $20 game each. We paid $1 each.

I once gave out copies of Modern Warfare when it was fairly new to try and spread around the people that had the game. People that already had a copy would trade them or sell them off. It worked well but was extremely expensive. Cash prizes have always been an iffy call. I was never really for it but never really against it either. If the execs aren’t lazy, it’s extremely easy to get enough prizes from sponsors to cover the entire LAN.
