SpectatorHey guys, I’ve been searching non-stop to find ways to boost my FPS since it’s stuck at a steady 60, but everything I’ve found does not work
. I’ve tried fps_max, rate 25000, fps_modem, trying to find a way to force VSYNC off, all sorts of stuff. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone on this wonderful forum could help me out. I have a 3 GHZ Pentium 4, 1 gig RAM, GeForce FX5200 (I think its 128MB) vid card with pretty current drivers, so I think I’d be able to run more than 60 FPS lol. If anyone could give me some advice that would be awesome and greatly appreciated. If I posted in the wrong forum, I’m sorry and feel free to move me. Cheers!January 28, 2008 at 9:01 pm #34942Liam
SpectatorSet it to Direct3d, turn vsync off, etc.

SpectatorDisabling Vsync is POINTLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU CANNOT USE MORE FPS THAN YOUR MONITOR CAN REFRESH!!!!!!!!!!! If you are capped at 60, going over it means you still get….guess what?! 60!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!! /thread
EDIT: Disabling Vsync also makes your games more likely to tear. I ALWAYS play with Vsync on. It’s pointless to run above vsync fps and it makes your games run more smoothly anyways.

If you’re having FPS issues in a game, turning Vsync off will help. If you have the ability to get over 60FPS anyway then it doesn’t really matter.
If you’re getting 60 FPS in a game, don’t worry about it. The human eye can’t tell the difference between 60 and 300.

SpectatorWow, thanks for that enlightening post Kuros, I wish I could be as smart as you…/thread
Anyway, thank you guys for the input. I’ve been trying to get vsync off, but I got to the Nvidia control panel and I can’t find anything in there about it. Is there a command I can run or am I just not looking in the right place? On a side note, my monitor caps at a refresh rate of 75hz so would that roughly equal a 60fps cap? I’m sorry I’m a n00b, I work on cars, not computers lol.

It should be in your CS video settings.

Spectatorhz = (generic cycles) per second, in your case monitor refreshes per second… so you could go up to 75fps (frames per second… note the frames in place of (generic cycles)) and your monitor know any difference, anything beyond that is purely ego.

SpectatorYou have a couple options to improve your game play. The first is net_graph 3.
This is going to allow you to monitor everything I’m about to tell you. Next know your computer.
If you have a dinosaur you might want to upgrade. Or if for instance you have a laptop you may be out of luck in the upgrade department.
Next off you’re going to want to make sure your rates are all good. Go to a stable server (not wcu.) preferably a very small server or a clan private server and adjust your cl_updaterate cl_cmdrate rate & fps_max.
Your optimal options with a good connection and good computer are going to be the maximum for these which are cl_updaterate 101 cl_cmdrate 101 rate 25000 & fps_max 101.
You can move the numbers around to adjust your LOSS and CHOKE. You don’t want any LOSS ever and you want to keep your CHOKE low.
In a big server choke is caused by the server not your client in most cases so don’t worry about getting choke in a big server at the beginning of a round when 15 cts are throwing nades or running around shooting.
I went over the net stuff first because if you have loss or a lot of choke it may appear that you are dropping frames but in fact you are just not receiving the proper amount of info from the server.
Once you get that optimized you can continue on to graphics settings.
First off you need to know a little bit about how your eye works. The human eye can only view about 20-30 FPS (most TV broadcasts are only 24 FPS). So why have more you ask? Smoother game play.
While you can only view 20-30 fps from your eye the game runs much smoother with less tearing and jumpy ness the higher your fps is.
A lot of people use a method called VSYNC to increase their FPS. VSYNC in a nut shell synchronizes your graphics card with your monitor.
It makes sure your graphics card doesn’t out perform what your monitor can display.
If you turn VSYNC OFF you will allow your graphics card to display as many frames as your card can physically render regardless of what your monitor can display. This can cause tearing or a slight jumpy ness but the tradeoff is a higher FPS.
If you want to see what your GPU can truly do go to your graphics control software and force VSYNC OFF for hl.exe then go to console and type: developer 1 and then type: fps_max 999
At this point depending on your graphics card you’ll notice your FPS is much higher then before. You’ll also probably notice that your game isn’t running as smooth because your FPS is constantly fluctuating depending on the graphical load in-game.
The choke point in this case is your monitor. Your monitor can only display as many FPS as it can HERTZ.
What are HERTZ you might ask? Well HERTZ is a unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second. Just like a Frame Per Second.
Your monitor displays Vertical Hertz and Horizontal Hertz. For the purpose of simplicity I’m just going to cover how Vertical Hertz effects your gaming experience. If you’d like to learn more yourself you can go here: http://www.osdever.net/FreeVGA/vtiming.htm
Their are essentially two types of monitors. LCD and CRT. CRTs are the big box monitors that a lot of us have. and LCDs are the thin-light monitors that are currently in main stream production replacing the CRTs. These two monitors have their trade-offs but without diving too deep into how a CRT and LCD work I’ll just explain what the Hertz differences are.
In most cases a CRT monitor can display more Vertical Hertz then a LCD can. Most low-medium end CRTs can display 85-100Hz while higher end CRTs can display 200hz or more. LCDs are usually limited to 60-75hz with only the cutting edge LCDs coming close to 100hz.
Each resolution setting your monitor has (640×480 800×600 1024×768 etc) has a maximum Hertz value asigned to it from the manufacturer. Each monitor is different but for most part medium end CRT monitors can run 800×600 in 100hz and 1024×768 in 85hz.
So what this all comes down to is what type of monitor you have. What resolution you play your game of choice in. How many Hertz that resolution can display for your monitor.
Asuming your GPU can display 100 FPS and your monitor of choice can display 100hz at your desired resolution you can play with VSYNC ON and game at 100 TRUE FPS without any tearing or graphical loss.
I use a program called RefreshLock to force my monitor to display the maximum hertz at my desired resolution.
You can download the latest version 2.21 here: http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rl/download.html
READ & UNDERSTAND the instructions before you use the program and you should have no problems at all.
Some side effects of forcing hertz on your monitor are that you might notice your mouse sensitivity has changed. and you may have to re-size your screen to properly fit your monitor.
Asuming you did everything correctly you should have VSYNC ON, developer 0, max_fps 101, and 100 TRUE FPS in-game.

SpectatorFor a final word for those that wish to listen. CRT monitors are better gaming monitors than LCD. A typical “from Gateway/Dell” CRT monitor will run about 75 Hz. The vast majority of LCDs including my fairly expensive gaming LCD run about 2 ms. Hz has almost NOTHING to do with fps on an LCD because it draws images by lighting up crystals (hence liquid crystal display) instead of having to draw them vertically in lines like a CRT does. Vsync synchronizes the drawing on the monitor with the incoming signal from the graphics card. Doing anything above what the monitor can display is again, pointless.

That’s why Windows will only let you go to 60Hz when you install the monitor specific driver. Forcing to something like 75Hz also voids your warranty in with some manufacturers.

SpectatorWell thank you everyone for the information, especially you Digital, wow. I ended up finding the VSYNC option and forcing it off. It bumped my FPS up to 100 constant, and about 40 in smoke so I’m a happy camper since I was mainly concerned with the effect smoke has on FPS. For the record I do have an LCD monitor, and if it does get damaged I’ll let you guys know. It’s time for a new one anyway
February 8, 2008 at 8:54 am #36185Digital
SpectatorTurning vsync off wont damage your monitor. The thing they were warning about was forcing your monitor to display a hertz level it is not meant to. The program I was refering to doesnt push your monitor past its safe range unless you tell it to through a advanced option. There is a chance on extremely old monitors that set to the wrong setting you could cause damage. But on new monitors within the limits that your monitor is setup for you are safe.
By the way if you list your system stats I may be able to recommend a upgrade for you to make your fps constant 100 even in smoke.

SpectatorCongrats…you still get 60 fps.

SpectatorMy video card easily does 200+ fps in CS and CSS. I keep vsync on though. Why make the card strain to push more than the monitor can do?

SpectatorLike I said if you have a monitor that can display 200 hz you can have 200 fps with vsync on. Apparently some people can’t read.

SpectatorJust to throw this valuable information out there nvidia has some cards that the windows drivers only put out 60 fps. As mentioned above anything 60 fps and over will run completely smooth. As long as you are steadily holding at ~= 60 you will have no problems. Nothing is wrong with your settings (nvidia thought it would be a fun driver design i guess).

I think its smart. Make the card strive to provide 60 steadily instead of ramping as high as possible.

Spectatoryes sir. My card holds steady at 60 and never dips below. I don’t have to worry when i would have 120 then suddenly 9 people jump on my screens and it would dip. As long as it holds its 60 (and it always does) im golden
