SpectatorOkay. So I know the 1.6 server has been going down for quite some time and it is obvious something needs to be done to revamp it. It seems to me that it is the job of the admins to keep the community happy and give them what they want to ensure that they stay happy and keep coming back. To my knowledge the rules for admin voting powers were established when the server was booming and votes and map changes were made against the communities wishes. Voting was limited as it was seen to not be needed to keep a full server. I believe it has come time to perhaps work out a new arrangement.
First off there are a lot of admins that I haven’t seen around in a very very long time. I feel that to start filling this server it needs to start with the people that take care of it. We need to get us all in there and inviting friends and making it so people want to join. Maybe we should set up times where we all plan on playing in an attempt to starting filling the server (it’s a long shot but maybe it will help). I do appreciate all the work with the new map rotation and think that will help the server once it is full.
Now the one thing that I can see would help fill the server is to give a few trustworthy admins that ability to either run fun nights more regularly or to simply be able to vote maps by their own discretion. I do not believe that is a power all admins should have but I do think some admins that play often should be able to vote maps when they feel the server is losing (or potentially losing) the current people that are playing. People will often complain about a map but not leave to stick through it and wait for the next map (or hope that an admin can pull some magic power and get the map changed). When this happens and the server stays at around 18 complaining people there is nothing we can do to make them happy. If there was a few admins that played often on the 1.6 server that could be…..I guess higher ranked than the others….this may allow us to fluff the server when needed.
Of course some of my ideas are probably not thought through completely and have holes in them but I do feel something needs to be done. The appeal of WCU is the amazing community that it draws and I would hate to see it lose that. So, what do you think? Am I an idiot and don’t see the bigger picture? Am I right?? LET ME KNOW!

SpectatorI agree with you 100% especially now since the sever seems to be dying we need to put some power in the hands of people who are responsible. Just a few months ago we have had players playing to like 3am in the morning and the sever was more than half full. The sever dosent have the best reg but people keep coming back for a good time and a fun community. We have to start building that community back up and the best way to do it is to give admins some power to do that. Look at the TF2 sever and look how it is starting to grow because admins have some power to make a difference there.

SpectatorThe server life is based on the maps we play, simple as that.
I’ve already suggested cooler, NEWER maps that we could play that I have seen have success on the <GT> (GamerTrust) server. (You should connect to their server if you never have and type listmaps to see what they’re working with- 69.12.53.20:27015*NO SWEARING!) You nominate maps to get them onto the voting option (5 maps + extension option). Most ppl don’t like the map selected? Nominate new ones and get people to “rockthevote”. The majority of power and influence in the server needs to be given to the majority , the players who DON’T have admin. Let’s face it there’s no always admins on and if the server get stuck on some lame *edited* map people should be able to change it. WCU is a great community and the server was doing very well for awhile and still fills up when a good map everyone likes comes on (d2, office, scoutz, etc). However, as the game ages we really have to take a look at what kind of maps we’re putting on. I am not too computer savvy so I’m not sure how much effort it takes to load new maps onto the server, but this change could be very effective if we’re really trying to revitalize our community. The fact is we’ve had pretty much the same maps in our rotation for the past however many years. Yes, some of them are popular, but they’re ALL overplayed. We need a change. Keep the classics.
My 2 cents, I <3 u guys.

SpectatorIts always slow during the summer and this summer is no different. Give it some time.

Spectatorliam i agree that we should give it some time

and thats very concerning.

SpectatorThere’s a fine line between being slow and dead, and we’ve passed it. I agree with what Rob said about giving power to a few trusted admins so they can vote for the maps that keep the server full. In my opinion, we’ve tried and suggest a few rotations, maybes its time to put up a map voting system? I remember back in the glory days of Appstate, the map vote was the way to go. So instead of letting an admin suggest a few maps and put them up to vote, why not completely leave it up to the players?
The problem with map votes though is that a lot of maps will often get replayed. It probably wouldn’t be too hard to write a script that will not let certain maps be played if they have already been played in last last 3-5 changes. Something like that..
I will write more later, got a few things to do.
My 2 cents, for now.

SpectatorWe’ve done enough changes over the last few days. Give it time to settle and see how this takes affect.
IE: We aren’t changing anything on the server for the near future.

SpectatorLockem touched upon what I was trying to get at and that is currently it is pretty much completely dead. Perhaps a temporary change in admin rights for few would do it (run the change until server is fixed, then let the map rotation take over). I know you don’t want to do this for a while considering many changes were already done but what is the turning point where we say we need more changes?
Thanks
Rob

Spectatorand I don’t really think that this is the way to make it happen. The way to populate that server is to get people on. Not give more rights to admins.
The biggest complaint I’ve heard is that the current admins run map votes every 5 minutes and generally abuse their admin. That drives people off. I’m not pointing fingers nor am I starting a fight, but thats what I’ve heard from multiple people.
But if thats the complaint I’ve heard, why would we give you MORE priviledges?
The rotation was changed. Give it time to pick up. If you want to help, get on the server and play, and STOP changing the map.

SpectatorThe reason people, being me, put up map votes is because the next map would empty the server, its not rocket science. It’s late at night, you have maybe 12 people in the server, the next map being prodigy, d2, inferno, nuke, whatever would empty it. At night, unless the server is full no one will want to play a map like that, people want to play fun maps..If you think trying to get more people into the server is abusing your admin, then el oh el 2 u.

If people start complaining, then change the map, but until then it should stay on rotation.
July 20, 2008 at 5:52 pm #51876lockEm
SpectatorThat’s fair enough. But I’m just going by what I have seen in the past on the server. If you wait too long, people will just leave without saying anything and then you’re out of luck. The only people I’ve really noticed who complain about the map and ask for a change is sticky-icky, GRK, and a bunch of random kids. From what I’ve seen people don’t generally ask for a map change if they don’t like it, they just leave.

Spectatori’ve seen the opposite lockem. people actually complain plenty but then get tired of repeating themselves. the regs complain least because they know it usually wont change

Spectatorwhat is with this rotation?? we just voted on a new and better rotation. please put the rotation we voted on back up.. it was much better

SpectatorGuys just sit back and watch. Get on the server and start playing. Dont worry about changing anything to make it work. Just get in the server and play. I will be helping along with all the 1.6 admins to make sure that the server remains popular and populated.
I know you think its dead, but I think you need to stop talking about it dying. It is not helping the situation at all again get your butt in the server and play.
