You’re not going to get anything remotely close to a gaming rig for less than $600, no matter how old it is.
I actually have to disagree with you there; about a year and a couple months ago, I bought a whole desktop for $340 for my girlfriend with an a64 2800+, 512mb pc3200, 256mb radeon x800xl, dvd+rw, dvd-rom, 160gb SATA and 80gb IDE hdds, creative audigy, and windows xp home.
So yeah it is possible to find good deals you just gotta look around. I find the best sites to look for such a computer to be forums.anandtech.com, hardforum.com, and notebookforum.com, all under the for sale/for trade sections. You will have to dig around in there but there are usually some good deals to be had. Or you could always find the parts to just upgrade what you have; for ~$150 you could probably get a dual core pentium with a pci-express motherboard and maybe a 7600gs or something to that nature.
OR
go on to newegg.com and buy an AGP graphics card if you are tight on cash. More than likely the 4x AGP bus won’t hold you back *too* much. And yes 8x cards SHOULD WORK FINE in a 4x slot.
