I was thinking about maybe having a charity MTG tournament. I think a suggested donation of maybe $5ish would be fine, and maybe $20 worth of prizes. All profits, after refunding the club for prizes, could be donated to Red Cross. Do you guys think this would be a good idea? Perhaps we can hold this on the Sunday after the next lan?

We might be able to get prizes for free/cheap from Quantum for this, but I haven’t talked to them about this yet. I’ll speak to them after I get some feedback from the club.

As long as this happens, I think its a great idea.

Does it have to be Red Cross? They have an extremely poor track record of actually giving funds where they’re supposed to go.

Doesn’t have to be the Red Cross, just any reputable charity.

Also, I don’t think DoSCE would have an issue with this because it’s not an entry fee, it’s a recommended donation and the club would have no monetary profit or loss. The fact that it’s a recommended donation also allows generous non-MTG player to help Japan if they so desire.

Wait, I thought Red Cross was one of the few charities that actually got the money to the people in Haiti. Of course, I think they also messed up the 9/11 fund…

Yeah they did fine on Haiti but that’s about the only disaster relief in the last 10 years they didn’t botch.

I think that since it’s entirely donation-driven and since proceeds are entirely going to disaster relief you’ll be able to get away with a whole lot more than you otherwise would in terms of university and state rules. It’d be a cold day in hell before anyone hassled you about it. This also opens up advertising venues otherwise unavailable, like local restaurants, retailers, and possibly the local high school. They’re MUCH more likely to let you hang a flyer on their doors if it’s for something like this.
