SpectatorThe only reason Apple has done so well the last few years is because Microsoft has simply ignored them. If MS were to launch an agressive advertising campaign that bashes them they way they’ve bashed Windows they’re screwed.
I mean Apple routinely lied in their commercials about how bad Vista was and people believed it. I haven’t seen a bash commercial in a while now, mainly because Windows7 is pure win. Now that they can easily win, it’s the perfect time for MS to start an all-out brawl.

SpectatorWindows 7 is fantastic and I am so happy I have it, but MS didn’t ignore Apple on the Vista bashing commercials, they just didn’t have a come back….
You won’t find many people that hate Apple as much as me, but I will hand it to them that their OS for the Mac is great and functionality on a Mac is hard to beat. Windows 7 FINALLY took that away from Apple and put the powah back into the customer’s hands, where it should be. If Apple can get back on the ball they will beat Microsoft though.

I think this is difficult to say, since Microsoft has recently focussed more on the user experience. This can only lead to future greatness. So, I think we will just have to see.
P.S. Apple sux..

What could MS say to refute a lie? All Apple was doing is driving home stereotypes for how bad the OS was even though most of the problems either weren’t serious issues or had already been fixed. You can’t advertise that your competitor is lying in their advertisements, that only works in politics.
If MS cared they would have wiped the floor with Apple back on OSX10.0-10.3 which were extremely hyped and were lightyears worse than Vista. Combine the pure fail of the original Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP pre SP2, and Vista and you might get to the same ballpark as the early OSX releases. They could have, at any time, annihilated Apple for how they let OS7 rot without adding any significant feature for 6 years, their extremely underhanded legal postering towards 3rd party manufacturers in OS8, and the way they hyped, released, then completely abandoned OS9. Then they released 10.0 which actually removed features previously in OS9 like CD burning and DVD playback and was extremely unstable. It was so bad they gave a free upgrade to 10.1 which still had all the stability issues of 10.0 and even diehard mac fanatics refused to use it as their main OS because of how slow it was. 10.2 fixed the stability issues but was still widely criticised as being slow and unresponsive even on brand new computers. 10.3 was so cool that a couple lines of 10.2 computers literally didn’t have the hardware capability to install 10.3, they met all the minimum requirements but were locked out because of a bootloader change hardcoded on the motherboard. Apple refused to make 10.3 compatible the old bootloader but 3rd party groups later created a workaround that tricked the 10.3 installer into thinking the computer had the newer bootloader. Oddly enough, once installed, the OS didn’t care what bootloader you were using.
One thing I find interesting that Apple gets away with that Microsoft never could, whenever Apple releases a new version of their OS they completely drop all updates and support for the previous OS. If you have a problem or a new bug is found you’re simply told to upgrade to the new OS and/or buy a new computer that supports the new OS. Compare this to Windows 2000 which was support through 2010 (9 years after replacement), Windows XP that is supported through 2014 (8 years after replacement) and Vista is supported through at least 2012 (3+ years after replacement). It would also have been hilarious if Microsoft had told every Windows Vista user that complained about speed issues to buy a new computer designed for Vista… hilariously expensive to settle the class action lawsuit, that is…

SpectatorI’m tired this argument Mac vs. PC. PC’ers should be grateful that there is someone else on the market to challenge microsoft. Competition makes everything better. It’s just like Mcdonalds vs. Burger King. BK will never be bigger or better, but that 2nd spot isn’t such a bad gig. (although I find the whopper to be one of the greatest burgers ever invented)
I own both, love my macbook pro more than anything in the world but i know PC is better. I just prefer cruising the net and looking sexy all at the same time.

SpectatorHP’s biggest seller right now is their line that looks like Macbooks.
Mac fans spend $2500 on a Macbook and are satisfied simply because it looks good and plays music but when the average person buys a PC laptop they expect desktop performance from it for under $400.

Spectatoryou can get a decked out macbook pro for 1799..but i dont disagree with what youre saying.

SpectatorMicrosoft’s counter to the Mac ads were the ads where they took people into stores like Best Buy, etc. and let them pick out a Window’s laptop and then Microsoft would pay for it. This was/is an extremely smart ad campaign as it advertises one of you main stores for you while proving that you can spend $700 on a Laptop that is BETTER (though the ads don’t necessarily say this) computer than spending $1500-2000 on a worse Mac. Now that Microsoft has come out with an online ad campaign (hopefully commercials too) we’ll see a lot of the Mac portrayed negatives go the way of the Dodo bird.

SpectatorThe last bash they made was the “they always say it’s better than the last version” commercial which aired for about 2 weeks before they realized Windows7 really IS better than Vista and quickly pulled it.

This isn’t right, Apple still supported tiger up until about 2 months ago. So technically they aren’t much different from MS in that regard, often times the reason Apple drops support for out of date OS is that they change so much in new OS’s that things no longer work, like for example from Tiger to Leopard, what was .Mac became MobileMe, .Mac was an internal system designed to work within Tiger, when they made the change to MobileMe, hey guess what *edited* in Tiger and .Mac started breaking and stopped working. So instead of beating the dead horse and continuously having to gift people free *edited*, they just stopped supporting it.
I’m with all of you though, you won’t catch me gaming on a Mac unless it’s just all I have at the time. For what I do as a career (editing, directing, sound work), I will always choose Mac, simply because the Final Cut Pro Suite of applications are fantastic and nothing released on Windows can touch the functionality or ease of use on it.
inb4 Adobe.. I used it and it actually is almost just like FCP, one thing that bugged me and they may have fixed it since then, but you can’t drag and drop blocks of footage like you can in FCP. So while they are similar I still just prefer FCP.
At the end of the day I hate Apple as a company for how they treat their employees, customers, and lies told daily.

Spectatorwith regards to mac gaming, i play sc2 on my macbook. Blizzard is one of the few exceptions (god bless them). No issues, although if i didn’t have the cooler pad underneath my lappy it would probably ignite from overheating.

SpectatorSeems like to me that if good graphics editing software was written specifically for PC, there would be no point in getting a Mac for functionality reasons. They’d be strictly an accessory (which imo they pretty much are).
August 11, 2010 at 11:24 am #104208Bitey
SpectatorIt’s to each his own, I mean like I said I just prefer the system made for Mac, everything else I have used just couldn’t touch it. I like using the best so when something better comes out I tend to use it. For example when I first got my MacBook a couple years ago I pretty much stopped using my computer completely. Now I have an upgraded video card on my computer, a better monitor, and Windows 7, now guess what? I rarely use the Mac, basically for my weekly D&D sessions is the most use that it gets.
Impress me and I will use your software, it’s pretty simple, I’m not a fanboy for either company, I use what works for me.

When Microsoft continues to support an OS they release updates and features as though it were still a primary OS whereas Apple only releases critical security updates. You think there’s a lot in common between XP and Windows7? From an update and core-foundation standpoint they have absolutely nothing in common. If MS were like Apple, there wouldn’t have been an SP3, they wouldn’t still be coding DirectX patches to make it compatible with new games, and they wouldn’t be making all their newest software compatible with it.
inb4 you argue otherwise bear in mind that Final Cut Pro 7 requires 10.5.6 to install.

Even the free video editor in Vista/Win7 allows you to do that, I can’t imagine it’s not a feature in Adobe CS5.

At the end of the day I hate Apple as a company for how they treat their employees, customers, and lies told daily.Their in-store support implies that their users are idiots and from what i’ve heard they treat their customers like them too. It’s really sad. They have the potential to do so much for their customers yet ruin it with elitism. How they treat 3rd party “allies” is downright contemptable. When they upgraded from OS7 to OS8 it was solely done to invalidate the licensing for all their 3rd party manufacturers so they’d have to renew them for the new OS. Like they had the 7.x update patch ready to deploy and said “hey lets make this a new OS instead”.

SpectatorDon’t make me feel like the bad guy lol, it was an explanation because this is what is “explained” to me, call it what you want, if it makes you feel any better I completely agree with you.
On Windows you get stuff patched and things continue to “work” but do they really work that well, meh sometimes they do, sometimes not even close, and sometimes they actually work better! I think Apple’s policy is let’s not do hard work on out of date OS, it has been like that since day 1, why would you expect anything different of them? Windows has their way and Apple has theirs I mean it must be working for them somehow….
Apple has been in the top 20 for customer support for the past 10 years I think, so you heard wrong, customer’s aren’t treated like idiots, they are treated like people with a problem with their computer…. Try getting that kind of support at Microsoft, try getting in-store support from Microsoft… You won’t get in-store that is for sure, and secondly you have to pay for tech support for Microsoft…
You’re right on third-party stuff, there is absolutely no support for them, I think that again this is a let’s not waste our time helping them, make them work with what we provide.
I mean I guess you can call all these things excuses, but I am not sitting on the board of Apple and I sure as hell am not making the salary for that, so I can’t exactly be held accountable for this, I am just repeating things I have heard, and giving my opinion based on working in the field. So I’m not making excuses for the *edited* company.
But I’m not going to let someone slander what decency they still do have in my opinion.
inb4 knowledge base, yeah Apple has one of those too and plenty of the articles solve the problems, in fact 9 times out of 10 an article is used to resolve the customers issue, people just prefer to “talk to somebody”.

If you buy your OS from HP or Dell then Microsoft has no service contract with you and is not obligated to help you. If Apple let 3rd parties market their computers they would do the exact same thing.
The last guy I sent to an Apple store for an iphone issue was told that his poor reception was because he had a bad sim card and he was told to buy another one. Not only did that not fix his reception issues but sim cards have absolutely nothing to do with cellular reception. That’s like someone calling HP because their wireless adapter is broken and HP sends them replacement RAM sticks, it just doesn’t happen. Support from PC manufacturers has gotten lightyears better over the last few years though. For example, HP sends the customer a padded package to return their computer for repairs and pays for shipping both ways. If you want service from Apple my understanding is you’re screwed if you don’t live near an Apple Store.

If you go to their message board you can get unlimited free support by certified MS techs. It’s not as fast or convenient as phone support but you get the opinions of dozens of reps, at least one of which is bound to have encountered your problem before.

SpectatorOne bad experience does not shape an entire companies customer service experience. That genius or tech that told them that was probably coached and/or fired, perhaps he didn’t know or is just a general dumb *edited*. I don’t know and I don’t care, but just because this one person had a bad experience doesn’t mean all experiences with Apple Support are bad.
I had a bad experience with Microsoft Tech a couple years ago, does that shape my opinion on Microsoft and Windows…. no it does not, it just means that I had a bad experience with that particular support person.
Also again though with the message boards, I agree with you that they are great and I have used them myself, but response time is very slow and most Apple Customers are pretty narcissistic sons a *edited*es… Maybe this is where your “elitism” comes from, not from Apple the company but from Apple fan boys? So that just “WILL NOT WORK” for an Apple customer, if they have a problem they expect to chat/call/drive in to a store a receive immediate help and resolution to their problem. This is what people have come to expect from Apple, why do you think that is?
August 11, 2010 at 3:55 pm #104217MasterP
SpectatorThat was just the last bad experience. When I worked at NCSU we sent people to the local Apple stores all the time and about 25% came back dissatisfied and still having issues. We sent people to a couple different stores so meh, idk.
Sure there are good and bad techs but I hate going into a store for tech support because you can never tell when they take their helpful hat off and put their salesman hat on. I’ve worked retail tech support before, it’s not fun or pretty.

SpectatorBack in the Win98 days they had a web-based OS 7 emulator. Everything worked like it did on a real Mac, up until it emulated a crash. That part was realistic too.
