Hello, I’m James, and I’ll be starting my pre-med education this Fall. I randomly came across the club not too long ago and felt inclined to join.

    I’m a Valve fan. <3 I love Half-Life and the Half-Life 2 saga. As well as Counter-Strike. I’ve dabbled in Team Fortress 2. I’m a 360 gamer until this September.

I’m planning on getting a gaming laptop when I refund my financial aid this September, and plan on getting the Valve Complete pack via Steam once I get it. So anyone who knows anything about decent gaming rigs and getting into the Steam and Valve PC community, lend me a hand. D:

    Yeah, yeah, I know. D:

But as for the laptop, I’ve been looking at the Gateway FX laptops. They seem to have pretty good reviews, and are pretty affordable for a gaming laptop.

There is no such thing as a “good” gaming laptop. /flame. I don’t care. They get hot and cook themselves from the inside out. Better to buy a crummy laptop and a decent to good desktop. Probably cheaper that way anyways than spending 1400-2000 on a laptop. I just built an EXTREMELY nice desktop for about 800 bucks. Then you could throw on a cheap laptop for 400 or so and come out the same price but with a much more capable gaming system and tons more in the way of storage options.

Overall, it’s up to you, but that’s what I’d do.

I like your idea… I could go with that. A good gaming rig that doesn’t risk overheating that often… and a decent but affordable laptop to go with it.

Could you message me or something regarding how to go about this? I’ve looked at a few sites, but I’m still a bit of a noob and don’t know what I should put in the thing and what’s unnecessary crap. D:

first JtD, welcome to the forums and hope you will enjoy yourself at WCU.

As for the computer thing… I could make arguments either way. The gateway FX line with the 9800m GTS is pretty darn good for the money but it really depends on why you wanted a gaming laptop to begin with. I liked having a gaming laptop back when I would go home on the weekends while at school and wanted to game at home too. If you only plan to game from your room (and of course at the LANs) then def go for a desktop. Besides getting more for your money, they are also more comfortable to play on over long periods of time. if I were starting out, I would go for a desktop and a netbook personally. If you are curious, I went the gaming laptop route then decided to buy a desktop anyways; one thing ppl rarely think of is unless you get like an SSD, laptop hard drives are MUCH slower than desktop drives, and when gaming that is a real pain (IMO)

I just bought an Asus G50V off of Newegg and I haven’t had any problems. I love it.

Sure, it’s a little bulky to bring to class, but it’s more of a portable desktop replacement.

    I got it for $1150.

    <3 Financial Aid refunds =)
