SpectatorHey. I’m buying a DSLR (well it is being bought for me as a grad present). I think I have settled on the Canon XSI since it is a entry level one (but at the higher end of entry levels). Is this a good choice?
http://www.us1photo.com/catalog/product_in…roducts_id=5822
I think that is what I will buy.
One more question. us1photo lists sd memory as SUPER SUPER expensive but they say it is “professional” memory. Is there any difference between that and a class 6 card at newegg? Thanks
RD

SpectatorNot sure about the memory, but I hear Canon’s what the pros use. I used to be into photography more, but not so much now. I will once I can either buy a camera or my sister will give me her DSLR (which is a Nikon) when she gets her new one.

At some point in time, I wanted to get the Canon Digital Rebel xTi. This one looks like it’s the next one up.

SpectatorYea, this is the new model of the xTi. I believe it is what I’ll buy. The link I included is not the stock lens (I was told this is the way to go). As soon as someone gives insight on the SD cards I’m purchasing!

SpectatorI’d recommend the Nikon D40.
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-18-55m…r/dp/B000KJQ1DG
It takes amazing pictures inside and outside. It has amazing reviews. The price is great! A guy from work let me borrow it for a little while, plan on getting one myself when I can gather the money. The flash it comes with works great (also there is an attachment if you like doing portraits and stuff that you can buy) Also, I wouldn’t focus so much on the MP, as I highly doubt you are going to be utilizing any resolution that would need 12 MP from the other camera.
And personally when it comes to DSLR I prefer Nikon. If it was point to shoot – Canon.

Spectatoryeah thats what I use, the Nikon D40. Canon and Nikon are both very good brands imo. Great camera, but I will tell you, to invest in lens. Although the 18-55mm lens that it comes with is a great starter, you will want at least a 200mm lens for long range shots. I bought a 55-200mm lens for pretty cheap (120 bucks) but they usually range in the 200-500 dollar range. Like mine, the cheaper ones won’t have image stabilization, but you can make up for that with a tripod or camera stand.
Here are some pics I’ve taken with the D40:

SpectatorMy sister has the D80 and D40 (I get to the D80 when she buys a new camera) and she likes them both, but she’s switching over to Canon next, I think.
She basically said something similar to what Rayz said — invest in another lens.

SpectatorGet your stuff from bhphoto.com, they are a little more expensive but trustworthy, dependable, and excellent customer service. If you google us1photo you will find several dissatisfied consumers and issues w/ buying from them. Not to mention the better business bureau has rated/graded us1photo with an F (http://www.bbb.org/new-jersey/business-rev…den-nj-27003943).
There is no difference in the memory cards. Its just a scam to get you to buy from them at their high prices.

SpectatorThanks so much everyone. AMerrill, your post helped a whole bunch. I wound up buying it today. Ordered the XSI from b&h and an 8g class 6 card from newegg

SpectatorMy fiance’s sister has the XTi and really likes it. Make sure you buy a fast memory card or you will be waiting for the camera to write to it, hindering your ability to take multiple fast pictures.

SpectatorWhy on earth would you spend so much on a camera?
There are much cheaper 12MP cameras on the market. Unless you’re really into photography as a hobby you’ll never need the extra features.
Also, make sure that the camera support SDHC. Any class6 SD card should do fine although I’ve been much happier with my Sandisk cards than the other brands I’ve used.

SpectatorI have a 3 mpx camera in my Blackberry Storm (Thunderberry)….thats what I use for most stuff… If I ever need to take stock photo’s, I have a Nikon D90 (which I got for under a thousand cause I have a merchant account with NCIX). It’s spiff…
<3 My video cams too…
I haz my 3 webcams…2x Logitech Quickcam Communicate Business, and a Logitech Quickcam Orbit.
Plus I have my Flip Video Ultra….but for making sex tapes I typically use my Panasonic SDR-H60.
Just sayin.

SpectatorHeh, I’m spending so much on a camera because it interests me. Also, point and shoot cameras have SOOOO many drawbacks (and I’ve missed too many fun pictures with them).

Spectatorgah I miss the edit button…
Anyways go on newegg or any site for that matter and read reviews for high speed SD cards, nearly all of them will say what a difference having a fast card makes compared to the cheaper ones. This doesn’t matter for most point and shoot cameras but it does for DSLR cameras. The problem will occur mainly when taking multiple pictures back-to-back in RAW mode. Normally compressed modes such as jpg don’t give a problem though, especially if the card is already class 6, but just something to look out for. I don’t know exactly what card you ended up buying so….

So Nickname why would you buy a $600 camera if you only use it for special occassions? Seems like a waste of money.

I agree with MP on this. Don’t buy something unless you are going to actually use it, and use it right.
Only reason I invested in a D40, was because I needed a camera with which I could grow as a photographer. I’ll go a step further and say don’t buy a Nikon or Canon unless you plan on investing on more equipment. Because you WILL need to get more lenses. Solely buying the camera with its stock lens is absolutely useless; your wasting a lot of cash and a 12MP point and shoot is much cheaper. What is useful about these cameras is the adjustability and versatility, and the ability to think your pro @ photography when you really aren’t. Plus it’s fun to show off all the cool toys that you will need to invest in (500 extra bucks easy)
