Spectatoruse newegg instead of tigerdirect.
Also the Q6600 is like a year old processor. Get something new, seriously, unless you are really trying to pinch pennies, get a Q9400 or something if you NEED a quad core or something like an E8500 if you just want something fast for gaming because a 3+ghz dual core will out perform a 2.4ghz quad core in 90% of games.
And don’t waste your money on an SLI motherboard unless you actually plan to use SLI. Instead save your money and get something with an Intel chipset.

Spectatori am trying to make it as cheap as possible while still making it worth it for atleast the next few years. preferably the next 5-10 lol.
and i don’t even know what SLI is. my friend put this together for me cause i don’t really know much about parts

SpectatorWhat is your budget and what do you want to do on it and what do you already have and I will put something together for you.

A tip for your friend, he just voided your CPU warranty. I recommend using a smart friend next time.
Btw, 5-10 years is unreasonable. Shoot for 2-3 years.

Spectatorim not home now. ill put up the pic of the specs of my current comp later. and how would the cpu warranty be voided

SpectatorThere are some killer combo deals on newegg right now for someone in your price range.
Antec 300 case + Antec Neo Power 500W power supply = $89.94 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…N82E16811129042 (choose combo deals in the bottom left)
EVGA 9800 GT 512MB + 4GB Corsair DDR2-800 = $164.98 – $50 in rebates http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…N82E16814130384 (choose combo deals in bottom left)
ASUS P5Q SE Plus LGA 775 P45 Motherboard + Core 2 Duo E8500 = $265.98 – $15.00 rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…N82E16813131347 (choose combo deals in bottom left)
Grand total comes to ~$530 shipped – $65 in rebates = $465. At under $500 you could even afford to buy a new hard drive to go with everything else.

Spectatorwill it run L4D, 1.6, source, TF2, and future games REALLY well?
and which comp is better? the one my friend built or the one nickname built? without looking at the prices
November 19, 2008 at 4:32 pm #64080Nickname
Spectatorwell they have the same video card, the same amount of ram, and the motherboard, psu, case wont really affect performance much, and the cpu on mine is a higher clocked dual-core vs the lower clocked quad-core, meaning it depends on the app but mine will be faster 90% of the times in games. And yes it will run those games pretty darn well.
November 19, 2008 at 5:21 pm #64089pyro urban
Spectatori want the i7 =( that motherboard it needs looks *edited*in wicked haha
nickname getting a quad core that will be better than the dual cores would really blow my budget?

well that is up to you.
also idk if they will have the combo deals or not.
also IMHO quad core is really overrated and there is nothing wrong with getting a good dual core processor for gaming.
November 19, 2008 at 5:50 pm #64091pyro urban
Spectatorbut in the future wouldn’t quad be better? it may be overkill for now but it’d keep me from upgrading within a year or two?
November 19, 2008 at 9:47 pm #64118pyro urban
Spectatorhmm?
November 19, 2008 at 9:59 pm #64121Nickname
SpectatorYou can’t base what you buy now off the future because by the time the dual cores are obsolete, today’s quads would likely also be obsolete.
November 19, 2008 at 10:00 pm #64122Nickname
SpectatorIf it were me in your price bracket, I would get the higher clocked core 2 duo.

SpectatorPyro, I suggest you listen to Nickname, He knows What he is talking about. So. Just get THe Duo. Overclock, with help from other people. And it will be twice better than Quad. Anyways Quad sucks.

Btw, for those wondering. A friend of mine overclocked his E6600 (2.4GHz dual) to try to match my Q6600 (2.4GHz quad). Even at a 50% overclock (3.6Ghz) he got significantly lower processor scores in 3D Mark ’07 than my quad at stock frequencies.
Get a quad. If you can’t afford one, don’t bother with future upgradability as the new intel processors already use a different socket.

B: synthetic benchmarks are rarely indicative of real-world performance
C: Whoever said quads suck, you sir are retarded. My point was that a a higher clocked dual core would be better for GAMING. Obviously if you want to do a lot of encoding, photoshop, etc, the quad core would be more beneficial.

A) Assumptions are sometimes correct.
How is almost twice the framerate in the CPU test not indicative or real-world performance? That’s like saying a car with twice as powerful an engine doesn’t really go much faster. I do believe a Mustang goes faster than hybrid Toyota.C) When Vista spreads the load between the cores, is there really a difference between gaming and encoding?
