SpectatorOk since the last tournament by me didn’t go off too well last time, I was thinking this time, since we have more time, we would do a Round Robin type tournament where each team plays every other team and the 2 teams with the most wins face each other in the finals.
What do you guys think?
November 5, 2008 at 3:39 pm #62000pyro urban
Spectatorexplain to me how it works and i’ll play. maybe.

if we have time, I really like this idea. Maybe just make the rounds shorter or something to accomplish this, but overall I like it.
One problem though:
team 1 beats team 2
team 3 beats team 4
team 4 beats team 1
team 3 beats team 2
team 4 beats team 2
team 1 beats team 3
In this scenario, teams 1, 3, and 4 have a 3 way tie for first; how would a tie breaker come about?
November 5, 2008 at 4:19 pm #62010MajorMajorMajor
Spectatormaybe incorporate margin of victory to eliminate a tie breaker
November 5, 2008 at 5:58 pm #62030Rydell382
SpectatorIn that case, i’m thinking maybe 3 different matches:
1v3
3v4
1v4
and the team that wins 2 of the 3 matches wins the tourney.
If two win 2 matches, then we go into the final match, Time isn’t much of a factor here, we have 2 1/2 hours with about an hour of schedule leeway.
November 5, 2008 at 11:56 pm #62088Kappamerc
SpectatorThere isn’t a reason to change the way we’ve hosted the tournament in the past.
Time is always a factor.
What happens when both teams tie? (A tie-breaker is had and if it happens every round then that is 3 tie breakers)
What if everyone ties every round? (Then the winner is based on tie breaker wins which = fail).
I feel the structure of round robin bring needless complication and tries to replace a system that works.
The way it should be done:
3 Rounds
1 Round = Warmup (Important because it allows the teams to get to know each others play style).
2 Round = Teams are paired and play against each other.
3 Round = Losers play the losers, winners play the winners.
There isn’t a reason to change the way we’ve been doing it.
The round robin idea is a pointless change. The tournament runs fine under the conditions we have been using.
ALSO, this idea should have been brought up a long time ago. You have had a lot of time to post any ideas in change to tournament structure and you pick 3 days before the tournament to announce this?
If we do round robin I probably won’t play.
Time:
3 Rounds = 1.5hrs
Setting up teams = 10-15 minutes
Getting into servers = 10 minutes
Announcing winners between matches = 10 minutes
Tie-Breakers = 15 minutes
Total: 2.15hrs – You don’t have time to *edited* around with a new system 3 days before the lan. I tried having this discussion right after the last LAN and asked for any ideas to be posted ASAP because the last LANs ideas were all posted last minute and it was run very inefficiently. There isn’t an excuse for bringing up this idea so close to the LAN.

SpectatorI’m sorry, but if I recall correctly, I did start a thread where you gave me ideas on what to do this LAN and I have been working on it ever since, then when I found out we have 2 1/2 hours this time and another hour’s breathing room because we left some leeway to move tournaments around, I figured that this might be a good idea, so far, you’re the only one to disagree because you’re obviously afraid of change. I also plan on shortening the round time to 10 min, 3 captures. If I can’t get all the kinks worked out by the LAN, we will go with your idea and then try this one the next LAN. So if you could just sit back and stop telling me how to do my job, I would greatly appreciate that…
If Major could elaborate on what he means, I would like that also…

SpectatorLet’s wait and see how many people are there on Saturday. We already have 16 people signed up; if we can get enough there to have 6 teams then we will have to do something different anyways.
I see kappa’s points but I think Rydell’s reasoning for changing things up a little is to give people more play time. If you are on a bad team, you get to play 1 20 minute round right now and thats it; with rydell you get to play at least 2 rounds even if you suck horribly. Besides, rydell’s plan incorporates 4 rounds instead of 3 which isnt exactly a huge difference in time espececially since we do have the extra time to play with, so why not give it a shot? or something like this where there can be no tie
ex:
round 1
team 1 vs team 2 -> team 1 wins
team 3 vs team 4 -> team 3 wins
round 2
team 1 vs team 3 -> team 1 wins (team 1 advances to final)
team 2 vs team 4 -> team 2 wins (team 4 eliminated
round 3
team 2 vs team 3 -> winner advances to final
team 1 vs team 4 on some fun map just for fun or they can opt not to play
round 4
team 1 vs winner of team 2 vs team 3
November 6, 2008 at 11:50 am #62135Rydell382
SpectatorAgreed, if we have more teams than that, we we will revert to the bracket system
The Maps will be the same except for the Tie Breaker will be 2fort 3 caps No Engineers Period
November 6, 2008 at 12:08 pm #62136Nickname
SpectatorActually I just noticed what I had posted is essentially the same as the “round robin” thing except its like a race to get 2 victories. The first 2 teams to get to wins get to advance to the final.
November 6, 2008 at 12:11 pm #62137Rydell382
SpectatorSo if we do that instead, we would avoid any possibility of having to deal with the first situation
November 6, 2008 at 12:14 pm #62138Nickname
Spectatoryes.
also if we do it that way, we will need another map since we will have an extra round. I suggest we use ctf_turbine, ctf_2fort, ctf_mach4, ctf_well (not necessarily in that order)
This scenario eliminates the warmup round BUT even if your team loses the first round, you still have a chance to make it into the final so not all is lost.

I’ll tell you whatever I want to tell you. I’ve been in this club a lot longer then you and I have dealt with tournaments for around 10 years.
Change is fantastic when its useful and planned well by a person who knows what they are doing. Change sucks when it is in the hands of a procrastinator who comes up with terrible ideas.
The round time is 10 minutes? I’m not playing in a tf2 tournament for a total of 30 minutes. Cupcake TF2 tournament fails.
My point is that you waste time until the last few days to actually start caring about what we are going to do for the tournament.
I’m done here, maybe next semester it’ll be run by someone else.

Even on the worst team I played for 1.5 hours last semester.
This idea should have been announced sooner and I’m standing by that.
Rydells system doesn’t give people more playtime.

SpectatorThe Maps we used last time were ctf_mach4 and ctf_turbine, but I will add in ctf_2fort with no Engineers allowed
and @ Kappa: well cya, i will be running it next semester because my term doesn’t expire til next year, and no I did not wait to plan this at the last minute, i just waited til now because I had a massive project to do last week…
The tournament itself won’t last 30 min, each round will last 30 min and that does not include the getting people on the server or getting the teams made up, all in all, it should take roughly 2.5 hours
and I already apologized about the last tourney because it was my first, if you don’t have anything else constructive to say, please gtfo already and don’t QQ anymore…

I was on the worst team last time and we played for about 40 mins total.
And since there is NOTHING that has to be prepared beforehand to get this to work, why is the timing of this idea such an issue?
If you are stuck on a bad team, you get to play 2 rounds: warmup and round one, that is how it has been for the past 2 years. Rydell’s system means everyone gets to play at least 3 rounds. Who loses there?

If that system is used, we need at least 4 maps. ctf_2fort, ctf_turbine, ctf_mach4, and ctf_well are the best and they are tried and true in our tournament setting.

What are you talking about?
Except for last LAN which Rydell ran,
Round 1 = 30 mins of warmup
Round 2 = 1v1 and 1v1 for 30 mins
Round 3 = Winners vs winners and losers vs losers
Everyone played all 3 rounds.
Thats how it was run for 3 tournaments and it worked fine. Nobody is left out ‘assuming’ there are 4 teams.
Speaking of that, if we have 24 people we can still do 4 teams of 6, if we have 28 we can do 4 teams of 7. etc…

we got rid of that by asking everyone if they though their was a stacked or unstacked team… and we can alsways swap around before the event starts…. i though that worked well last event.
