I’ve had a problem twice so far that I am not quite sure where it could be coming from.

Basically, the screen will freeze up for about a minute and then the monitor will turn off. The button glows orange as if it were on standby, but when you hit the power button it will refuse to turn back on. The only way I seem to be able to fix it is to hold down the power button on my computer and reboot it that way. And the second time it happened it wouldnt even work right away.

Any suggestions on how to solve/prevent this problem?

    when will it freeze?

    ingame or all the time?

    after XX minutes?

    desktop/laptop?

    spec’s?

Sounds like a powersupply or heat problem.

The last 2 times it did it was when WoW was being played. The first after the game was played after a couple of hours and in the middle of a boss fight that is known for somewhat intense graphics. So, I figured my computer just went WHAT THE *edited* and froze itself.

The second time was after a boss fight when the character was just standing there doing nothing. So ingame, only twice over a four week period.

It’s my desktop and I dunno my specs unless I fish them out of somewhere.

Everything but the screen stays on. The first time it happened you could ever hear everything running in the background. Well, you could at least hear vent running, but the game was frozen. Heating I would hope isnt a problem with all the fans I shoved in the thing, but its a possibility.

I also need to clean the poor thing out. I just need the money for a *edited* can of air (A compressed can of the *edited* I breathe on a daily basis should not cost what it does).

graphix drivers up to date? you play any other games for long periods of time? have another monitor to try?

Watch your video card temps and/or test the game with a different video card to see if you can recreate the results. I lean towards video card problem but it could possibly be a power issue, although I think that is less likely considering the way the monitor acts. It really could be a number of problems. If it were me I’d just use old video card for a while and see if it happens again.

Anytime my monitor has shutoff but it wasn’t a crash it has had to do with my video card.

yeah i bet its a video card temp problem. Ive seen where that happens before when the video card just gets too hot

When you are borderline to not having enough power it will sometimes cut the biggest drain off, in this case the video card.

Also, when I mis-mounted my 8800GTX’s heatsink it VERY quickly overheated and shut itself off but the rest of the computer kept going.

I don’t have another monitor or video card to try. Though I plan to buy at least a new monitor soon.

What is the easiest way to monitor temperature or power usage so I can figure out what it is?

Usually only for a handful of hours at a time. Maybe no more then 2. And the only thing I’ve been playing lately besides WoW is Battlefield 2.

Your best bet is to grab a graphics intensive time demo like 3dmark or something and run it a few times in a row. If it’s truly a heat problem, that’s a good way to ferret it out. I’m pretty sure Tim got you an Nvidia card did he not? The new drivers came with a pretty nice monitoring program. It looka like dis:

He has an EVGA 8800GTS and his PSU is a Thermaltake ToughPower 650W, I HIGHLY doubt that it has anything to do with power. As he said the issue has only come up twice in the past month, and just so happened to do so during the same game. His computer has had 0 issue with heating or power and I still highly doubt that it is the problem. We’ll get something such as 3DMark downloaded and test it out over a period of time to see if something happens, the problem is that it seems like an issue that you can’t recreate easily.

Could be an issue with WoW. WoW has a tendency to lock my computer completely up to the point that I have to hard restart it. Think my problem is with SLI, but I think some non SLI people have been having the same issue.

    WoW is a cruel mistress.

I probably should check for driver updates. That aside I’ll try what what all of you have been suggesting that is within my power to try.
