So I wanted to know if anyone uses liquid cooling? I want to build a new machine, and sound is an issue, plus heat. I was curious if liquid cooling was worth it and how it has worked out for people using it. A friend of mine used it, but he ditched it because he said he had to keep adding water to it to make it run well. He also had an issue with a leak, which killed the MoBo. Also, if someone swears by it, what system do they use?

    Thanks.

Also, would it keep the temp down in a room? My old machine heated up the whole room, but i ran it all the time, is the liquid cooling more efficient in keeping things cool? Instead of just blowing the hot air into the room? And is it really silent?

I’ve used it for the last year and haven’t had any problems with it. I do have to add coolant to it every couple months but it’s not really that big a deal. I use the system built into the Thermaltake Armor LCS case which is equivalent to a Thermaltake Prowater.

If you take your time and do it right you should never have a leak. Quality parts make all the difference as the cheaper ones tend to corrode and leak.

As to heat, it helps some but not much. The same heat is generated no matter what cooling solution you use, the advantage of liquid cooling is that you can quickly channel that heat to a radiator to dissipate instead of leaving it on a heatsink attached to the CPU/video/RAM. The part you’re cooling is significantly cooler but your room, not so much. As to noise, there should be significantly less noise as radiator fans don’t have to spin anywhere near as fast as a CPU fan. I can’t even hear my two 120mm radiator fans.

Thermaltake makes some good 2u cooling solutions. Power supplies are a large generator of heat. They are taking 110/115 volts and turning it into 500-700 watts on a typical gaming machine. Based on the average efficiency of the cheap psus that most people use, I’d say that’s one of the larger heat producers. Then it takes a huge fan and blows all that heat right into a room. Kip pretty much summed the rest of it up.
