First off thank you all for bearing with us as we get through some of these issues that came up the past couple of days.

The room where Aphrodite, the gaming club’s webserver, was stored had its AC go out. Since Aphrodite shares the room with a large amount of networking equipment and there is no ventilation in the room, the server overheated and had been restarting constantly as a result. Rather than hope this problem would fix itself (which it wouldn’t), we took a proactive approach and this morning, Aphrodite was moved from its lovely home and taken to my office next to the data center. The plan there was to take all of the data on Aphrodite and virtualize it onto the school’s VM array. This has several advantages for us: 1) the server will no longer experience overheating issues (this was not the first time it happened), 2) We will have access to more resources than we originally had and 3) if we need more resources (CPU, memory), it can be added dynamically with the click of a button. Thus we began the process of transferring the information to the VM environment.

Unfortunately, this took a lot longer than originally anticipated and we were not able to complete the process today. So instead of leaving us completely without a website for the weekend, Liam has transferred the website over to our game server, Tron. Now, Tron is a very powerful machine but its not designed to handle the load of the website plus full servers, so if you experience any issues with lag, please be patient as it is only temporary and will be fixed on Monday.

If you notice any other problems on the site or with the game servers that may be a result of this situation, please contact Liam on our IRC channel or simply post them here.

Thank you all for your understanding and patience and remember this is only a temporary inconvenience.
