Autistic kids don’t need to be in regular programs, end of story. The kid’s parents set him up for this and they’re mostly to blame. The administration should have filtered him out as well so it’s partly their fault.

I have all the sympathy in the world for the family because autism is terrible but they have special programs just for this sort of disorder and the kid should be in one.

The video didnt work, but it seems the teacher was mistreating the kid in some way?

At any rate, MasterP has a point. As an autistic child there are programs designed to better educate him and facilitate his autism. He should be in one of those programs, not in regular school where they aren’t prepared to deal with that sort of thing.

I’m sorta confused as to why people keep casting the parents as the main villains. Yes, the kid probably should have been in special-ed, but *edited*. The teacher paraded a mentally disabled kid in front of the whole class and had them vote on whether or not to keep him. How the hell do you defend that kind of cruelty?

As I said, the video didnt work for me. What is happening to the teacher now? It’d be rather nice if she lost her job if that is how she treats the children she is supposed to be teaching.

This is sad when kindergarden kids can vote kids out. I wish that was the case when I was in school. The fact he is autustic is sad and I hope they get all there field trip budget…

Whether or not there are programs for special needs kids is beyond the point, what that teacher did was terrible and she should be barred from teaching for the rest of her life, if she had a problem there are other ways to handle it.

there are always circumstances where the whole story or wat not was not stated. but because the chances of that are slim i still think that she need to find a new profession

I can see your point but keep in mind that most teachers aren’t trained to handle special needs kids and most administrations are pretty retarded when it comes to common sense judgements. I’m not trying to make excuses for the teacher, her actions were far from making any sense, but I’m sure there’s more to the story than what’s being told. She may have tried to handle it in other ways, such sides to this type of story are often omitted to spicen the outrage.

she should at the very least get a large suspension from teaching anywhere near that school district again

to be fair, sometimes autism doesn’t get noticed as quickly as it should, and so the parents might not have been as aware as they should have been. However that doesn’t seem to be quite the case here, the parents should have noticed that the kid is different, there are many signs, interestingly enough if your child is advancing quite rapidly in the earlier stages it can be a sign of autism, not brilliance. Difficulty with making sentences can be a sign too. I dunno the full situation, or how old kindergarten is anymore, but at the camp i worked at you some autistic kids would be mixed in the youngest group, i dunno if the parents aren’t aware or simply feel that it doesn’t matter at that age, but after that group they get separated from the regular kids. Most families now have both parents work, and so they don’t get to spent enough time with their kids to find out things that they would’ve found out had they been around more. However, what the teacher did is inexcusable and should be punished as much as the school can.

That teacher is a horrible person… yes it is difficult to deal with autism…

but teachers have to be ready for all sorts of different situations…

what she did (perhaps to handle the situation) is inexcusable…

as children we are taught by adults (a lot of times in kindergarten) that

we should be kind to ppl and accepting and that this sort of behavior is wrong.

What on earth was she thinking?

As for the parents… perhaps he didn’t belong in a normal classroom but then

again perhaps his problem wasn’t so severe… I don’t blame them for trying to

give their son a chance to be like all the other kids…

Summation: Bad teacher is bad. She should be suspended. The fault lies entirely with her.

That makes more sense, and I agree with you that at times not the whole story is told, I know she may not be trained to handle a special needs kid, my only point is what she did makes her the true retard in this circumstance.

just my $0.02, from my experience of one class toward a teaching major and the field experience, I’ve learned that teachers is supposed to be especially tolerant of kids with special needs and that the first priority that they want a teacher to do is pass along concerns and all up the hierarchy of the educational system, in this case likely to the principal or school counselors, and not to make a scene of it like this… Now, if they had gone up the hierarchy several times to no success, and had no luck talking with the parents, I could see this taking place (not that it’s appropriate), but I seriously doubt that administration would just idly watch a struggling teacher, especially at that level.

My mom works with autistic children all the time and she said that in no circumstances should this child have been remotely paraded around the room. In my own opinion I don’t believe anything the child had done could merit this type of behavoir from the teacher inexperienced or experienced.
