After testing my own working 8800GTX and having the same problem I went into Task Manager and disabled the bottom two cores for hl.exe under the process list. When I ran CS:Source the game ran smoothly.

His power supply is 500W but it lacks an 8pin connector to connect to the motherboard cpu power connector. All his power supply has is a 4 pin connector.

Could not having the 8 pin connector be the problem? If so, which is a good solution, buying a new PSU or getting a 4pin to 8pin converter?

I’d be happy to look at it during the LAN.

The 8pin aux is a dedicated voltage feed for the processor, to be perfectly honest, I’m surprised it boots into Windows at all without it. This is most likely the problem as the processor is only getting a fraction of the power it needs.

I’ve not seen a 4-8pin converter but with all the rigging going on today it wouldn’t surprise me if you found one on ebay. I would recommend that you spend a good $100 on a high efficiency, cable management power supply. By the time you spend a good chunk of change on a computer you might as well get a good power supply for it as it is just as important as any other part in there.

Ultra is suing every company that makes cable management power supplies and having invented it they have a chance (small) at winning so I would recommend getting one now from a good manufacturer because Mike can tell you Ultra’s own supplies suck.
