Most of you know I fun linux. I was dual booting but I messed up my windows partition and never got around to reinstalling it. My computer is a fairly new (1.5 months) replacement of my old laptop. It came with vista on it. I have a legal copy of both vista and xp. I heard some terrible things about vista and was always comfortable with xp. For those of you who are on vista please share your experiences with it. Also, if you could tell me how service pack 1 improved or made worse the current vista situation.

*note* i thought about this because just as i left yesterday i heard chris say how much sp1 improved vista! happy comments!

    Thanks all

The people who whine the most about Vista are the ones who care the least about learning how to use it. Vista is NOT XP, big surprise I know but many of it’s detractors were expecting the new OS to be just like the old. Said people would then whine about the percieved lack of new features.

Vista takes a little time to get used to but once you do it’s unlikely you’ll want to go back. Since installing Vista I have only booted into my old WinXP install once, and it’s been over 6 months. There are some things that aren’t compatible with Vista but there none of them I’ve come across so far weren’t already unstable in WinXP anyway.

I recommend Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate. I run Business and love it but then again I’m not much of a home theater person. I prefer big TVs and stereos for that sort of thing.

I run Vista Business x64 myself and I have to admit I’ll never reinstall XP again on my personal box.

Vista is stable as hell, even before SP1, and I’ve noticed a definite improvement with the new SP.

Drive transfers/access is much faster and things seem to be running smoother overall.

People don’t like Windows Vista because it scares them. It’s like “OMG Microsoft didn’t *edited* this up? How is that even possible?” Windows Vista is like the greatest operating system ever written. Maybe Windows 2000 was equally as cool back in the day but with DirectX 10 and all the stability that Vista has, I’ll never go back to WindowsXP. I have never had to reboot my computer because it became unstable. Generally the only time I’ve had to restart it was for drivers or updates. Windows Vista Ultimate x64 btw. (They didn’t screw up 64bit support on Vista like they did XP.)

i’m running home basic theire are countless things that are not directing properly, set up wrong. prob *edited* i did wrong.

one tihng i cant stand is the fact you cant manualy go in and change root directorys, you half to figure out how to make the OS to do it or its not going to work. theire are manny things i’v found out the hard way that deleat random files, programs not linking correctly, what was wrong with xp? vista is preatty though A++ for that

Far from it, Valve didn’t like the ATI drivers on my laptop and I had to wait 6 months before they fixed CSS so I could play it again. Now Valve doesn’t like Nvidia’s OpenGL drivers, apparently Nvidia’s release of OpenGL is unsupported by CS1.6. Leave it to Valve to screw up drivers that haven’t been touched in a decade or so.

People still use OpenGL? D3D ftw. I remember my Voodoo card…they were the OpenGL masters.

Indeed they were and I believe there hasn’t been a major update since 3DFX was bought by Nvidia. Btw, I had to force CS1.6 to start in D3D in the launch options. It also won’t let me switch to anything about default video settings or it crashes out giving random errors in Valvish. All this trouble with a game that’s been out for years and not a single issue with any non-Valve games, wonder why that is.

    Issue 1: Steam sucks

Issue 2: 1.6 sucks more than Steam

I’ve been using Vista SP1 for ages now and love it, I just need to uninstall my current RC and put on the official build, /sigh.

since you’re coming from the linux world, there’s a chance you’ll already have seen more thorough graphic desktops (beryl) and such, but there might still be a surprise or two. Vista has some transparency by default, and likes animation.

Another thing that was truly nice about Vista is that you could go in and mess around with sound devices really easily. I have a sound card and a USB headset, so in XP to switch I have to go to audio properties and change the default device manually, in vista it has a list of sound devices and you just select one and hit “make default” and bam, there it is.

one thing tho I’ll forewarn you about, in case you somehow missed any mentions of it, windows vista will insist on being the only bootloader if you’re trying to multiboot off of one hard disk, and there’s no option to undo that. Plus, last I checked (though it was months ago) GRUB couldn’t chainload the vista bootloader from another disk.

The big thing I’ve noticed for picking between windows XP and windows vista is drivers. Recent computers will likely have hardware that has no drivers for XP, and older hardware by just about anyone but Nvidia and ATI will be iffy in vista. And the ATI TV Wonder Pro pci card had no Vista32 or Vista64 drivers and ATI didn’t plan on any. This was pre-AMD times tho.

I’ve tried triple booting (vista64, xp, and linux) and dual booting (only vista64 and XP) off a single hdd and I have persistently broken something that has royally screwed my computer over, just different things each time that I installed Vista. This may be me trying to tweak too much of it, but it has not failed yet. I’ve gotten a copy of Vista32 and I’m trying that out at the moment, but so far I’ve only booted to it to install it and the basic programs (firefox and xchat) that I use, and haven’t booted to it since, so I haven’t yet tampered with it to the breaking point.

And in case you never saw the mac vs. pc tv commercials, the vista permission thing is a pain.

In general, I’ve gotten fairly familiar with Vista, but at least in my experience, once I started digging around and doing things beyond what a basic user would (msoffice, AIM, internet) then it got annoying very quick, and eventually unusable. To its credit, for basic users it’s very nice and stable.

Of course, all this is pre-service pack 1. I might try that out this weekend after I back everything up… (I finally went on ahead and got a backup hdd so that theoretically i can just hit the restore button if something goes wrong)

    ——————-

And one last thing, for the record, I am a much greater fan of OpenGL than I am of D3D.

perhaps with this past round of computer trouble, but that wasn’t the only time I tinkered and it failed. Plus he wanted to know our experiences

haha another thing no one mentioned (shame on you Kuros) is that Vista is meant for mid-high end hardware only. Don’t put that crap on a p4 with 1GB ram or less (even though it “will run” on a p3 with 512 *cries*) Many people that don’t like Vista hate it because of either the reason MasterP said (it is not XP) or because their computer sucks too much to run it. Even now I don’t run vista on any of my laptops but I love it on my desktop.

aight, so i’ve got a question. i was wondering if anyone else who has vista has had their computer slow down some since sp1 came out. i’m not sure if i should restore my computer to factory settings, or whether it’s sp1. I have avg free, which i thought would take care of anything, but my computer seems to be acting a little sluggish since sp1 came out. another possible cause could be that the night before sp1 came out, i was at a LAN, and one of the people who was at the LAN apparently doesn’t believe in anti-virus (or not downloading pronz, one of the two). however, none of the other people seem to have noticed problems with their pc’s. so idk. any suggestions?

i haven’t looked at that, all i know is that both before and after vista doesn’t agree with something about backups…

once a week, i turn it on, boot into vista, plug in my backup drive (usb), go to the backup thing, do the full backup, try the safely remove (never works), turn computer completely off, unplug usb hdd, power computer back on, and all of a sudden it won’t make it through bios if the monitor is plugged in. really random. one time it even somehow overrode the hardswitch on my power supply. I had to pull the cord itself before I could kill my computer. it scares me. i don’t liek it. it might be hardware almost failing, might not. doesn’t happen if i don’t do this whole backup routine step by step. to get it to boot again i have to pull every connection on the back, let it sit a few minutes, and plug it all back in. then XP works just liek always.

under xp without too much tinkering, it does just fine.

So I’m sitting here backing up all of my files because I get to format my *edited* and reinstall Windows due to the Beta of SP1 not uninstalling and also because svchost.exe continues to crash my computer every 2 hours :D.

Yeah I have pretty much decided that beta service packs from MS never work out. I installed xp’s SP3 beta on my laptop and it made it so the computer wouldn’t resume from standby… ever. Not such a good thing for a laptop.
