SpectatorSo, to please the powers that be at work, and to intentionally try to break windows vista (note that I want to break vista into tiny bits, not xp), I have recently (like last night) installed windows vista along with my xp for a dual boot setup. I started off by jacking my permissions and not being able to see or write to any of my My Documents contents, but figured that out and fixed things back. But now it’s worse… I was working on setting up pidgin on vista… PIDGIN. that’s not a system thing. I was working on getting it to automatically connect to gamesurge and auth and all that for irc, and rebooting every now and then to see how that was performing on system startup, as well as to help occasionally copy files over between xp and vista. I didn’t tinker with any system settings or files (for the first time in a long time). every time i restarted I used start > shut down > restart. the proper way. they’re both working fine and all. then i finally get vista to a point i can be okay with (still doesn’t automatically auth, but automatically connects all the way to #wcugaming) and I restart my computer so that I’ll have my alarm clock in the morning. NOOES it says.
<windows dir>\system32\hal.dll is either missing or corrupt. try copying it from the installation cd.
zomgwtf. so I copy it from the CD and try again. same *&%^ error message. I run many a chkdsk. problems are fixed but not the problem I need to have fixed.
so there’s your story of why. currently i’m on my linux server (<3 my surplus sale power mac g4 running linux) and that’s how I am typing to you. there’s a chance that another chkdsk or two will fix it, if not then there is only one answer – reinstall tiem. forum and irc surfing will possibly be the only way for keeping in touch maybe this whole week, depending on how well reinstalling TWICE goes and if I can do it quickly enough, around classes and meetings and all. that’s right, twice. ima back all my xp stuff up where my vista partition is now, then reinstall xp, then move everything into it, then reinstall vista, then have to set everything back up again. zomg no fun. peez.

SpectatorOuch, that doesn’t sound fun at all. Good luck getting it all sorted out!

SpectatorThere are specific instructions for dual-booting Vista. I suggest you research them and follow them or you will have the same issues.

SpectatorI can certainly give it a shot; like I said I have done it in the past but we will see.

\system32\hal.dll is either missing or corrupt. try copying it from the installation cd. 99% of the time that’s an automatic reformat. As soon as you copied the default from the install disc you’re guaranteed to have to have reinstall. There are specific steps to recover it but if it’s missing or you replaced it with the original you’re screwed.
I’m running an XP/Vista dualboot and haven’t had a single issue with it using the default Vista boot loader. I changed a few settings with bcdedit but they weren’t required for it to work. Google has surprisingly good documentation on bcdedit.
Dice, if Nickname doesn’t fix it give me a shout.

SpectatorI think he is bringing it to the crib tomorrow, if I can’t get it for some reason i will give you a call.

I know installing XP AFTER Vista can be hard but my understanding is the hardest part is getting it in the Vista boot loader which isn’t really that hard. If it can’t read the install CD then he’s got other problems.
Also, just for safety, take the Vista hard drive out when installing XP. If they are on the same drive, make the Vista partition hidden or locked using MiniPE or Hirens. The last thing you want is to have the XP boot loader overwrite Vista’s, I think that’s an automatic epic fail.
March 11, 2008 at 5:57 pm #39345Nickname
SpectatorI have done this before and I remember installing XP after Vista and it removed vista’s bootloader. Threw in the vista disk and ran startup repair and I was good to go. It can be tricky but we will see what we have.

SpectatorI’ve been triple-booting for some time now, this problem is a first for me… but i knoes how to do it
… just for some reason vista did NOT play nice with private xp files, and that may have triggered my spontaneous errors with hal.dll… in any case, XP is back on with drivers and anti-virus and basic stuff. I would just push vista over into a VM but i don’t know any VM software for linux that supports 64-bit virtualization (vista 64)March 13, 2008 at 8:55 am #39471Nickname
Spectatorwhy do you even need 64 bit virtualization? Your computer isn’t taking any of the advantages of vista64 anyway; you would need 4+GB of ram for that. In fact, vista64 uses MORE ram than vista32, so it is stupid to use it on a computer that has less than 4GB of ram.
March 13, 2008 at 5:23 pm #39485Falcon
Spectatorheh, I’m not in it for the ram, silly. CPU calculation space is the name. Granted anything with Windows in its name won’t do good at it, but when I was using linux that made a world of difference for compiling code and such and when I was looking at vista i thought that usefulness was mutual. So now I have a copy of 64-bit, and I’m not shelling out for 32-bit. And 32-bit virtualization won’t run 64-bit anything, which apparently the programs I know of won’t support 64-bit emulation.
In any case, the whole point of emulation is to just have a file so that when vista makes me unhappy, it hasn’t wrecked my computer, as well as I can do shift+delete and destroy it. very satisfying.
March 13, 2008 at 5:55 pm #39489MasterP
SpectatorThe Vista keys work with both 32-bit and 64-bit.
Nickname there’s quite a bit more to 64-bit processors than expanded memory addressing.
March 13, 2008 at 6:00 pm #39490Nickname
SpectatorAgreed, but Vista 64 uses up considerably more memory than Vista 32, due to that same 64 bit addressing.
March 13, 2008 at 6:10 pm #39491MasterP
SpectatorIt’s not really Vista’s fault, most 64-bit OSs (including linux) have swollen memory pointers and allocation problems. It’s just a by-product of having the extra bus size and addressing capabilities. Larger files in memory also clogs up the processor’s cache but since that’s increasing as well it’s not really that big a deal.
Do most users care? Not really. They just counter this by buying 6GB instead of 4GB. The way memory is going it’s not really that expensive to buy 2GB sticks anymore.
March 13, 2008 at 6:13 pm #39492Nickname
SpectatorAnd I understand that; my point was that Falcon only has 2GB ram, which is why I was asking him why he was running vista 64. Hell my computer is doing almost nothing right now but it is using up 1.9GB of RAM as is.

coz my computer is built on some extras that have craptastic 64-bit support. IE tv cap cards

Spectatoryeah… grab one of my copies from the CRIB, the ones that say “use the key from the computer case” Those are all 32 bit.
March 13, 2008 at 8:30 pm #39509Falcon
Spectatorand honestly the memory thing was never an issue that i noticed… even on 1gb ram it did just fine and dandy with the stuff that supported 64-bit drivers (graphics) and the programs on it, tho i still say that vista itself had a few breakdowns along the way

Btw, Intel is releasing a new socket early next year. Kuros’ epic upgrade decisions may not last long.

At least with Intel you know that 4 year old P4 processor is still going to work in a 680i board.
