99% of the time that’s an automatic reformat. As soon as you copied the default from the install disc you’re guaranteed to have to have reinstall. There are specific steps to recover it but if it’s missing or you replaced it with the original you’re screwed.
I’m running an XP/Vista dualboot and haven’t had a single issue with it using the default Vista boot loader. I changed a few settings with bcdedit but they weren’t required for it to work. Google has surprisingly good documentation on bcdedit.
