Oh Malley
SpectatorIf you have issues with the way current things are set-up, such as what games we play and what platform or even the format of the tournaments. Please approach me and confront me with it. I appreciate the open input of the community I’m responsible for leading. I’m not going to blow you off, tell you your stupid, or just go “Effin’ deal with it, I’m the President”. That’s not how I roll. If you have a concern, voice it to me, whether it be in person, PM through the forums, e-mail, or AIM. I will gladly discuss whatever concerns, suggestions, or whatever else may be on your mind.
I’m only requesting this because I know there is some discontent among a few individuals, and I have heard through various channels that there were harsh criticisms about how things are. Also, I try to post the games, their settings and formats before LAN time so that if there any issues with them that they can be addressed and altered before the LAN. I’m powerless to change things last minute. I usually have some experience with the settings I define and play test them with a few individuals to receive their input and feedback. If you would like to be a part of this process, please, let me know. For the games I don’t have much of a forte with, I rely on those who are active within the communities of those games.
Furthermore, I try to give opportunities to make things balanced and fair and I work with what’s available. I can’t cater to everyone’s needs and desires. If I did, this would result in almost utter failure of the LAN event for the console section. If you don’t know many people, the LANs are the great way to network with other console gamers. Or check the forums. That’s how I’ve gotten to know a good portion of the community. Also, show up to any console meetings we have and the general meetings of the club. Those are great platforms to open the floor to address issues, complaints, etc. If you’re not sure how much support you’ll have, make a thread or poll in the appropriate area. If you want to try something new, please give me the evidence that there is going to be a solid base of interest to do so. I pick and try games at the LANs that I think will draw the most people while having some diversity in the games. Everything I do, I do with the goal to build a larger community for this club and to establish a firm foundation underneath it to support and maintain it.
Thank you for your time and your support.

SpectatorPGR3 was kind of a let down. We had about 8 to 10 votes for PGR3 to be played at the informal console meeting. and we only had 6 people there to play it. and several of the people who played it, were not there at the console meeting. What happened to all the racers?
I apologize for the networking issues involved with that game. It seemed to be the only game for the Xbox that didn’t want to system link. an unforseen, and hugely complicating issue. I think the bigger issue with the console stuff is not starting early enough. *shrugs* I had a great time in everything I played so its no big deal to me. Got to know some people.

SpectatorIt was a great lan except for the start time, but thats not anyone fault but the people who didnt understand that if the game starts at 2 o’clock you need to be there by 1:30 not making your way to the UC. As far as Hao it was the best yet, we had enough tvs and i think the 2v2 went good. I know people werent happy with settings or that app won but Oh Malley has been posting for weeks the settings, video links, and invites to play.
All in all i liked it i got to meet alot of the people face to face that i play with or msg regularly, it was fun and if it wasnt for you then you are in the wrong place
By the way when are we having a general & console meeting to decide the games, i hope it can be soon so we can get the flyers made.

SpectatorWhat if we were to split the Smash Tournament into two? We could have an “anything goes” tournament that is run the same as we are doing it now and a more open-ended tournament that bars glitch exploitation, but allows more stages to be used. I know that some people might be turned off by the idea of two Smash tournaments, but it is very popular at the LANs and we already have two Counter Strikes. This could keep everybody happy.

SpectatorI think you need less tournaments. I know that you want to play as many games as possible, but it’s really not feasible in the time span that we have. I have cut PC tournaments down to 4 total tournaments.

SpectatorI don’t know if the lack of people playing PGR3 was due to the fact that the LAN was considerately smaller than previous ones, but despite that, I think we should have another vote at the next console meeting to either give the title another try or switch to Need for Speed Prostreet. This is simply because no one at the informal meeting was really dedicated to a particular title and no one knew how popular these games would be.
As for two SSBM tournaments… one thing that I’m always for, no matter what game, is trying something new at least once, as long as it’s thought out and not a ridiculous waste of LAN time. At the next LAN I imagine I’m going to be much busier but at the same time I’m willing to hear what other people would like to try (but they’re going to have to actually POST on the forums to let me know). I’m all for keeping people happy, but everyone needs to be aware that executives cannot please everyone.

SpectatorHonestly, I don’t think that even with all the stages, no glitches (who is to determine what is a glitch, though, and what was meant to be in the game by the developers? After all, the developers knew about wavedashing before the release and decided to keep it in anyway), and items, the results would be any different. There are only about four people in this school who can perform with any reliability during a heated match these ‘exploitations’ advantageously. These players would just adapt to the new rules and still be fine. For the rest of the people who are closer in skill, it would just add more levels of randomness into a situation where randomness is unwanted.
I think the reason why people were upset this lan simply is because of the small turnout. The very first smash tournament ever had around 30 people, and the rest were close to this number. However, this LAN’s event only had 18 people. The dedicated players showed up, as expected, which resulted in the casual players getting knocked out earlier than if there were twice as many people.
The problem could be solved by just opening up more freeplay tv’s for smash. That way, the casual environment is kept and the game is still being enjoyed. As it was, we only had 1 freeplay tv going at once which was being used almost exclusively to practice hardcore for the tournament.

SpectatorWhen I play Smash Bros against friends, I have fun even if I lose. When I am beaten by a wavedasher in the tournament, I don’t have fun. There is no satisfaction in being beaten by someone constantly exploting glitchs. Wavedashing most certainly is a glitch. Go into Vs. mode and select a computer opponent with the difficulty set all the way up. You will see no wavedashing; only dodges. This was not the first LAN where many complaints were heard. There were plenty at the last few.
If we were to bar all glitch exploitation and the same people won, it would still be better as less people would be angry.
