That looks awesome. Finally, my PS3 will get some use.

True, only the Sony Playstation didnt even exist yet (or in the case of the later games, it had just been released). That’s not exactly fair. Same for the early Metal Gear games.
Fair enough. But the GBA, DS, and PSP existed at the same time, Square’s involvment with Sony didn’t stop them from rereleasing the first six FF game on Nintendo’s handhelds (admitedly, I and II were also rereleased for the PSP). It is very wise for a first-party developer to court the affections of a third-party developer and get some sweet exclusives out of the deal. That is a recipe for success. However, it is also wise to understand that third-party developers are very independent and, in the long run, may very well jump ship.
Several examples:
Square: Nintendo-Sony
Enix: Nintendo-Sony-Nintendo
Konami: Nintendo-Sony
Capcom: Nintendo-Sony
Sega: Sega-Ninteno
