youre going to want to wait till they come out with the next line of 8 series cards that will support dx10.1.

    other than that your set.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Everyone was so worried about DX 10 and then look what happened… My new specs are (for next semester):

    1. ASUS Striker Extreme LGA 775

    2. Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450

    3. Corsair XMS2 Dominator Series

    4. 4x 320 GB Western Digital in RAID 5

    5. Nvidia Geforce 9800 GTX (2nd to be added in the Fall of 08)

    6. Thermaltake Armor LCS

    7. Thermaltake Big Water 760i

    8. Thermaltake Toughpower 750W with Quad +12v rails (probably upgraded to 1Kw in the fall of 08)

These may change in the next month or two, but that’s what it’s looking like right now.

8800gts 320mb is FTL. Get the 8800gt; it costs the same or less and is faster

Also, go for the q6600 instead of the e6850; they cost the same and you get 4 cores ftw.

4 cores are not better for gaming…it will be for the newer games, but not ones like source or even TF2

yes but the q6600 will still be more than enough for source and tf2, and will have better longevity. Plus, he can always OC to 3.0ghz (e6850 levels) if needed.

    Lukewarm Big Water 760ii

the 760ii only has dual flux capacitors, you need to get the 765xi with tri-capacitors and a liquid management system to counteract the bandwidth/flowrate inhibitors.

    #30692

yeah i was specing out the 765xi but the tri-capacitors inhibit the amplification factor and the charging quantity of Kirchhoff’s photosensing quantum dot PSK3 PV cells. you also need to have something to monitor the infrared radiation if you go the 765xi route

it may be better but not in my budget

well i don’t like to OC because it shortens the life of the computer and the most intensive games i play are source, tf2, and cod4

all of those games will play wonderfully on the q6600

once again, it will be better over the long run than the e6850, even though the e6850 will be slightly faster in some situations.

Actually, the majority of parts now are made to withstand a little extra push. If you follow a roll over cycle of about 3-4 years, overclocking isn’t really going to hurt you.

as it stands right now my cycle is 4-5 years :(\

    Check these out:

    http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.htm…1&chart=422

2000 points higher of 3d Mark ’06. 20 FPS higher on UT2k4. The processor balances the processing load across all 4 cores, whether the game requests it or not. This makes a tremendous difference because some of the newer games will hold themselves back if the think they are maxing out the processor or memory but this way they never get close to it.

    GTFO and STFU.

lol @ tomshardware; those tests are run at very low resolutions and quality settings so they are CPU bottlenecked; most games are GPU bottlenecked though so the difference in performance would be miniscule… for that one game. Overall thought, 4 cores is going to be better than 2 cores.

That was the 3D Mark06 Graphics test run at the default settings. You can crank the settings up but it won’t make a difference. The decrease in CPU performance will be proportional to the difference already established.

I was referring to the game tests

BTW, we are comparing the q6600 to the e6850; overall the q6600 wins about 3:2 in those benchmarks so its still the best for now and down the road once more applications that are designed for multicore are released, it will be dominating the e6850

of course, in the e6850’s defese, it was the winrar in WinRAR :)

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. The older games that I was talking about are single-threaded and will NOT be able to use all the cores, it will not spread over the cores it will only have the ability to use one core.

Here is a link if you don’t believe me.

So as I was saying, in the future, yes the quad-core will out do the dual-core, but right now and in the past a dual-core is what you want for gaming.

And trust me I cant wait till having a quad-core will be beneficial for a gamer, I am just making sure people are not lead in the wrong direction.

well technically going by what you say, a single core cpu would be the fastest for gaming.

What I am saying is that overall quad cores are better. Yes right now the e6850 will be SLIGHTLY better in most games, but since most games are GPU (not CPU) limited it won’t be a problem. In the future though, new games will be optimized for more cores, making them substantially faster than dual core cpus.

Let me wrap this up with my point. The point is I think it makes most sense to take a VERY SMALL performance hit in current/older games with the quad core in order to have a cpu that will just get better over time and therefore will be a good performer for longer.

BTW bitey, what was your point with that first article? It clearly showed quad cores being faster on supreme commander, unless you wanted to point out this:

“Up until now games have been mostly single-threaded. This means that they are only capable of taking advantage of a single-core on the CPU. If you have dual or quad-core processors the game will not utilize those extra cores efficiently to provide any gameplay experience improvements. Therefore multi-core CPUs have been pointless for gaming. Times are changing though, and we are finally seeing the evolution of gaming take on the advantages that can be had from utilizing multi-core CPUs.”

which I don’t think really helps out your argument…

That is exactly my point… Your obviously taking what I am saying wrong. Do I need to repeat myself or can you gather from that my point? SupCom is one of the very few games that offer multi-CPU support so it actually makes a difference in your game. I don’t think it is worth the extra money for a good quad-core right now, but I might be wrong, I was just showing that dual-core had and right now at present beat quad-cores for gaming. Did you miss the part where I said I look forward to quad-cores being used more?

my original point was that the q6600 was the SAME PRICE as the e6850 he was considering, that’s why I suggested it.

    #30846

So the question is, will the q6600 last long enough to be able to handle the new games that will have multi-core support, and will it really be worth it?

    I have the e6600 btw…

    #30849

I personally have the e6600 too, and I can push it to e6850 levels and I don’t really get much of a performance increase. Since the q6600 is basically the e6600 w/ twice the # of cores I imagine its a good chip.

Not to be a flamer or anything but most games have patched in multi-threading support. Even old ones like Doom 3 are now multi-threading.
