So, I don’t know if anyone else has bought or attempted to play this thing. But if you did, and if you were on campus, I imagine you were disappointed. I sure am.
It turns out that (this is paraphrasing information from smarter, more tech-savvy people than myself), Tabula Rasa is classified by packet shapers (which WCU uses to prevent bit torrent use) as a p2p type of packet situation. Which means you will find yourself with a ping rounding out around 10,000.
Of course, most other games (WoW, CS:S and others) are identified as QoS packets and slip right through the packet shaper. Which, needless to say, is why you can play them.
So that’s the bad news. And it is bad, the game could be interesting and it’s getting pretty good reviews. Something new in a land of right-clicking to attack every ten seconds. And a vacation from fantasy land. If only.
The good news, however, is a little double-edged. First, this situation is easily fixed. The priority that the packets from Tabula Rasa receive can easily be upgraded by someone that knows how (not me, though others with this problem have effected this change).
Tabula Rasa uses the following ports:
80, 2106, 7777, 7790, 8001, 8101-8104
And the following IP addresses (including the launcher):
216.107.243.* 206.127.153.* 216.107.254.* 216.107.244.*
* stands for a wildcard, anything from 1-999. Or so.
So anyway, the bad side of the good news is that calling IT services and mentioning anything along these lines is akin the calling China and explaining to them (in English) that you have a list of ways to improve upon their economic structure. Which is to say, not easy.
My question to you helpful folks is this: does anyone actually know someone in IT that can help in this process? Can any of you explain the situation better than I can, in technical terms, to someone that won’t think you’re having trouble “getting online with your psp?”? Recommendations (aside from taking the game back to Wal-Mart or something)? Anything to say whatsoever?
Tell your savvy friends that IP addresses go from 1-255…not 1-999. L2 binary.
