SpectatorSo, seeing as how my Geforce 7900 is dying (bad tension regulators – chips on the back of the card that are hitting around 100C) I am most likely going to be buying a new card this week. This one just loves to give me all kinds of colorful pixels that blink, appear, disappear, and all that jazz. Given that I’m using a CRT I know it isn’t my monitor. So before anyone suggests it is something other than my video card, take that into account.
Back to topic.
I’m planning on buying either a Geforce 8800GTX or 8800GTS(higher end model).
My first dilemma is the plethora of benchmarks I’ve seen for the two cards. It seems that the GTX is better but price per pixel don’t really seem to make the GTX worth the price jump.
Second, within each respective category I am wondering what specs would be ideal for each card.
So essentially what I want to know is: Which card should I get and specifically what specs should the card itself have. Most likely I will be buying from newegg so if you want to link me to a card, please use that site.
Any input from others (who know what they are talking about – don’t waste my time if your an idiot) is always welcome and generally worth hearing out.
Thanks ^^

SpectatorWell my first question would be what resolution does your monitor run at? If you’re running at 1280×1024, there’s no reason to get the 8800gtx instead of the the 8800gts.
Its been my experience that the 8800gtx runs ~25% faster on most games (on resolutions >= 1440×900 in games that are not cpu bound), at ~25% higher cost, making them basically linear on the price/performance curve.
Therefore, my suggestion would be to go for the 8800gts unless you are running resolutions of at least 1600×1200 or your cpu is something along the lines of the core 2 duo e6600 or higher, so that you are not running into a situation of your games being cpu bound.
Likewise, if you have a high end cpu and run at higher resolutions, I would suggest spending the extra for the 8800gtx as the difference should be noticeable especially on games like bioshock.
Just fyi a lot of the gaming club members I talk to have either the 8800gts or the 8800gtx so they are both really good cards and the brand preference I’ve noticed is eVGA (lifetime warranty ftw!). If you need benchmarks, I can get a couple for you but from my memory, MasterP and I ran a benchmark on CS:S:
everything maxed with 8xAA and 16xAF,
my computer: e6600, 2gb ram, 2x160gb raid0, evga 8800gts 640mb, @ 1680×1050, cs:s test gave my computer ~ 189 FPS
MasterP’s computer: q6600, 2gb ram, 2x250gb raid 0, evga 8800gtx, @1440×900, cs:s test gave his computer ~220 FPS
Hope this helps!

SpectatorAs far as the monitor and processor goes, I plan on getting new ones fairly soon. Most likely a widescreen lcd monitor and a e6600. However, given that I’m getting all three of these I will most likely go with the 8800GTS, for the sake of my wallet
.Currently running a 4yr old CRT monitor and a pentium D 2.66 oced to 3.2.
So out of the 2 evga 8800GTS 640mb. Which should I pick here at newegg.

or

The first one has a 500MHz core clock while the bottom is 576MHz.
Current list of possible items I might buy:

Monitor Advice welcome.
Thanks again,

Spectator2 things:
a) don’t waste your money on that pci slot cooler! I have used them before and they do almost nothing!
why are you buying the e6600 instead of the e6750? I see no reason for that unless your motherboard doesn’t support the 1333mhz fsb of the e6750 (its cheaper than the e6600!). If that is the case, I will gladly sell you my e6600 at a good price so I can buy the e6750
Oh also about the videocards… I would say go ahead and get the cheaper one, you can always overclock it yourself
September 3, 2007 at 1:00 pm #25831Kappamerc
SpectatorYeah, I really would like the e6750 but unfortunately my mobo is revision 1.0 and doesn’t support the 1333fsb. At this rate i’ll have a new pc >.<
current mobo

revision 1.0 – too bad I didn’t get a revision 3.3 that does support 1333.

SpectatorI’ll make you a good deal on my e6600 for your pentium D plus some cash

SpectatorHow long have you had that card because I am running the same card.

Thats the exact video card I bought last September.
I think im gonna buy a new motherboard just to support the 6750. Now which mobo to choose ^^.

SpectatorI have the e6600 it has a huge manhood.

Spectator** UPDATE **
After reviewing the warranty, I should still be covered until the 9th of September. Neweggs offices are closed today but should be open tomorrow. The card I bought is out of stock so I am pretty sure they will send something else. From what I read on recent comments a few people got 8600GTS’. I am still getting the 8800GTS 640mb. This will just enable me to put all the parts im replacing into my other case ^^.
Anywho, lets hope I can still RMA.

SpectatorO Rly?
Original Intel plans to unveil this processor with an $850 price tag would have earned the Q6600 a poor value reputation; fortunately they changed their mind on time. Even at $530 the Core 2 Quad Q6600 is going to be an expensive bet given that the equally clocked Core 2 Duo E6600 is available for about $350 with near future plans of a price cut. The E6600 delivers the same performance in games and many other Windows-based applications. Furthermore, the E6600 uses half as much power and will most certainly overclock better. Therefore we feel that for 90% of today’s tasks, the dual-core E6600 is a better processor when compared to the Q6600. No doubt this kind of scenario will change over time, but for now and many months to come, the majority of consumers will be better off with a Core 2 Duo processor.

SpectatorE6750 FTW. Beware its 8x multiplier (the E6600 has a 9x) depending on your motherboard’s ability to handle high FSBs (since your FSB will have to be higher for same clock speed). Other than that, it is absolutely amazing. G0 stepping guaranteed, and along with a EVGA 680i SLI (a1 revision) I have a solid 3.73ghz on the E6750 on air cooling (Thermaltake V1 heatsink *stamps seal of approval*).
As far as the original topic of this thread is concerned (video cards I believe…) I would recommend EITHER of the EVGA 8800GTS 640mb cards – depending on your preference. If you don’t want to mess with overclocking the graphics card (which is really easy to do with ATItool – try it, and yes it works with Nvidia cards), go with the superclocked version (576mhz core). If you plan to OC it anyway, you can really pick either. One on side, the 500mhz one is cheaper by $15 or so, and on the other side you are slightly more likely to get a little bit more performance out of the superclocked version, simply because EVGA will not ship it to you if it’s not stable at their factory OCed speed – and depending on your luck a stock speed card might not even make it to there.

SpectatorBitey, that is some old info; check newegg, the q6600 can be had for a whole $55 more than the e6600, making it the much better deal.
And masterP needs the extra manhood, check out his avatar haha

SpectatorOrdered the 8800GTX EVGA, e6750, 20″ widescreen monitor, a side case fan that is really loud and pumps tons of air, a g11 keyboard, a gigabyte motherboard (haven’t had problems with them yet and the one I ordered got pretty good reviews given the price range).
The card and fan came in already, went ahead and put them in my current machine just so i have something to play with.
Holy hell the 8800GTX is huge.
Lets hope my rma gets processed soon. Wanna know what they will replace the old card with.

Holy hell the 8800GTX is huge.Yes it is huge. If you want a REAL disappointment, take the heatsink assembly off it and see what you really paid $600 for. When you take off the heatsink and fan it looks like a extra long sound card. Definately not what I was expecting to be underneith but *edited* it heats up fast without the heatsink on it so theres more than meets the eye.
Oh, and I only paid $290 for my q6600. At the time it was $70 more than the e6600. Definately worth the extra cash.
