I have a bunch of questions, and thought you guys could help. I am getting curious about server companies and which are better or worse. Also, I am getting curious about what makes one server better than another. I know that low ping and all makes it better but you can go into servers with a low ping and have horrible registry. I wanted to know what makes registry bad and all that. I see servers posting their fps or tickrates and also have no idea what that means. Any help about the inner workings of servers would help me a lot. Thanks

Lower the ping and higher the tickrate the better the registry. Also client settings, ie, rate, cl_cmdrate, cl_updaterate, and interp all deal with that.

So than are decent servers very expensive cuz it seems many servers out there really suck. What is a low or high tickrate. You say higher is better but on what scale? I have no idea if 50 if high or 50000 is and again what is low?

WCU is 66. Best I think is 100.

I think the range is 33, 66, 100, could be wrong though.

WCU is running several on one. Just depends on how ballsy your box and internet connection is.

Client settings in 1.6 are minimal, there really aren’t any for a person to change to enhance ping or gameplay.

I don’t believe there is even a tickrate for 1.6, Liam, but our Source server is 100tick.

what is a tickrate? i really have no idea

    #24174

yes, our tick on CSS is 100, thats why its only 24person.. CS 1.6 does not have a tickrate.

PS: thats just to get a basic system that will run good.. to make a good gaming communities you must know what mods to out in and which to keep away, their are 20billion options here this is why you never see any 2 servers the same. as well as custom scrips, exc, exc, exc,.. Its hard to make an eliet server where people keep coming back… just to let you know they are ALOT of work and headake

PS: why do you wont a server?

Interseting. I was told it was moved to 100 tick but dropped back to 66 because of issues? Dunno. :) Sounds good to me though. :D

Here it is from the horses mouth so to say (as many call me a horse’s *edited*). The source server is 100 tic. The 1.6 server is default which is most likely 33. Lowering the frame rates on our server helped the registry and lag. Tron is a two year old $10,000 machine with dual opterons (older) and 16 gb of ram (newer). It continuously runs 5-6 servers at all times. Each server is fully logged, which requires faster hard drives. Every time someone hits someone, the round restarts, someone dies or spawns or joins, in every server we have, it is logged. Imagine how much reading/writing that is in a single day. To run a single source server of about 16 players wouldn’t take quite as much. Any half way decent machine today would be able to do it. The reason you ping so well to WCU is because Tron has special internets on an OC3 (now OC12) connection. If you don’t know what all that means google it. I’m just rambling at this point anyways.

WELL THAT SEEMS LIKE A PRETTY BADASS

WELL THAT SEEMS LIKE A PRETTY BADASS MACHINE. I don’t necessarily want a server, I am just getting curious about it. I also have began scrimming and know it would be much easier to get a server, but wouldnt mind a half way decent one. My college would never let us host a server on our internet. How did you go about persuading wcu to let you do it and who sponsored the machine?

    read our history page: http://www.wcugaming.org/?page_id=19

It was not easy for anyone, in fact it was extremely frustrating getting our residential living and IT dept to first start to support us… of course i’m talking 2ed hand here as I was not the founder but was 1 of the first admins and 2ed president. Get a few of your buddys and friends together on campus and then do your schools steps to “become a club” once a club you can then apply for $$ and prepare to talk to every “higher up” school personal and have a few reasone and goals that supports your schools goals and bingo. start having lans and meetings and the club grows. …or you can just play here <_>

Well I must add my inquiries are nothing to be taken away from Western. I am just curious on how to get something like this to happen at my school, the college of new jersey that is. We have about 4 thousand people living on campus and with these 4 thousand all we have is a 63 Mbps connection symmetrical. With that being said it is not even enough on some bad nights and some people aren’t even able to sign on to AIM. To starts something like this at my school would be close to impossible in my eyes being that our college internet would need to be highly upgraded in order to supply a server which can hold people connecting into it. As new jersey had a giant budget cut last year there is not much money floating around campus to supply us with support on upgrading. This past school year we went from 48 Mbps to 63Mbps (In their eyes that is a big jump, in the comp nerd eyes its pathetic. To break it down we always have a 170 kb cap on our asses and at night time when everyone is using the internet we are limitted by the total bandwidth to about 25 kb. I know what you are thinking…EW.) The only way to do this would be to raise a ton of money, which again is pretty tough. But again, I’m not attempting to take anything away from wcu. I’m a lazy kid and the last kid to start anything like this at my school. I just get curious on how a feat like this was accomplished. All in all, though, it would be pretty cool to be like adam and others and be god of a college server and to be the founder of something this badass. So this is both an inquiry and some serious props to you kids at WCU. Go you guys

How many meg is your internet connection and how many on your campus?

If you want to know about “purchasing servers” I can help you out with that. Unlike most of the other repliers here I’ve sadly played competitively or at least scrimmed a lot more than most of them.

I know of a lot of good server companies and can answer those specific questions if you’d like. If you ever use their IRC channel my alias in there starts with CAL-cs| so yeah, find me.

Our campus runs OC12 which is somewhere around 650 Mb/s effective. And I’m god of the servers now, not Adam. At least for now I am anyways.

haha, i know your god now :), i just meant the person that started it. I know all if this relies on you so that is why we pray for no presidential assassination. Anywho, that is a pretty massive connection. How many kids on your campus?
