Well the console touneys are out of the way of the results were not too bad.

Proposal: We should be alloted more time to finish the tourneys and then only the “dedicated” players would participate in the tournies. Or perhaps even have an all console Lan…..so what do you think….post your comments on this issue and dont flame…….

We may try to get started earlier (or on time even) and things will go much more smoothly, especially if we have networking there earlier. That was our faults for not getting up with them before hand on what time we were going to be there. Of course we decided over Borat at 9 Friday night…ah welll.

Part of it is figuring how much time each game needs. We haven’t done a scheduled thing before, so it kind of porked up pretty badly. You certainly won’t get enough time for say, 50 kills / 2 maps double elimination, but you could get away with 25 kills / 5 minutes double elimination with a little more time (and by getting the brackets/teams ready waaay ahead of time).

Well we now know several things as far as PC tournaments go. The main thing we learned is that we didn’t need quite as much time as we had planned for quake 3 and cs:s. It would also be nice if people would tell us they needed games a lot earlier than 2 seconds before the tourney starts. I think we can compress a bit more and fit in more time for console tournaments.

we should just let the hardcore players play w/e games they wish to play. we can not make everyone happy….and placing 45 minbutes for 20 people for a tourney doesnt work. i say have it like the app lan. say halo2 is at 4 and cs is at 4. oh well….you can go to the one you might do better at. not too many people can win on pc and consoles. as i said before we cant make everyone happy….but the way it was set up this time it didnt work and it made the pople that wanted to play in the tournies unhappy.

well alot of people are…..also the setup we have is not working….so thats why im posting this crap. so we can give consoles more room to do things….its annoying when halo 2 is at 12…alot of people left before we even started and consoles we more time…..45 minutes is not enough for any tournament.

Also look at pc’s…you can have like 30 people in one game. on xbox the most you can have is 16. Also if we have 2v2 tournies we can only have one team play at a time bec we dont have enough tv;s or xboxes……so consoles are much harder to get setup seeing as pcs have it better in the player capacity department.

If people are coming just to win and just to play in the LAN to win at a certain game then I’m sorry, perhaps they should be more focusing on playing in some other types of tournaments then that of a LAN event where if I had to guess 95% of the people are just there looking to have fun and play the game, while winning prizes and “winning” the tournament isn’t their first and foremost priority.

I believe the principal is that they don’t want to have to force people to make the choice between playing in one tournament or the other, but to have the ability and the choice to participate in any tournament there is. But because consoles are limited to the amount of people are playing in one tournament at a time, there is an ability to allow multiple console tournaments to be ran at once or possible even a console tournament as well as a PC tournament.

Perhaps an organization should happen that designate a certain time period only for a set amount of console tournaments to be ran? Perhaps a console tournament could be ran while the Quake 3 tournament is being ran?

Overall I’m just getting this vibe that you’re trying to turn this into some professional competition between players when it should just be about the fun, winning prizes is a perk that Adam and the rest of the executives have worked hard in getting us, so enjoy it.

Eh, I posted something similar to the suggestions part of the last LAN poll in another section.

Honestly, a lot of things could have been done differently in retrospect but it wouldn’t have made that much of a difference. If you want everyone to have fun, well if you have a 5 min time limit or 25 kills single elimination, well.. they only get 5 mins if they lose. Not much fun there. That’s why consoles either need to have a longer time for tournaments, a separate day, or heck, even free play.

Consoles and TVs are limited though. BYOC doesn’t work, because two or even 4 people may share a console. A couple buddies come over and they all play split screen in the room or at different times and what not. So there’s a limiting factor there. You can’t play split-screen or any sort of game between multiple people on 1 PC unless it’s turn-based. And BYOTV isn’t all that great either since TVs come in multiple dimensions and so on and so forth. And people would complain if they got stuck with like a 13″ TV whereas the guy beside him has a 26″ or even a 32″ Widescreen television. Plus it’s simply too hard or risky to move large televisions for fear of breaking the thing or being unable to put into transport.

Would it not make sense to run console tournies the whole day along side pc tournies? Most gamers are primarily, if not exclusively, one or the other.

I’m sure there were more people who would have and could have brought consoles had there been better communication about it. I, for one, could have brought at least my 360, and a TV if need be. I wasn’t aware we were in need of more consoles though- it seemed like it was a “bring em if you got em” situation instead of confirming that Person A, B, and C were definitely bringing 360s.

As far as people not wanted to lug all that stuff down, would it be so hard to get 4-8 people to bring consoles and 4-8 other people to bring TVs? It just needs to be better planned ahead of time, and confirmed who is bringing what to guarantee that we had the hardware we need.

or what if we were to open the brackets the minute sign-up closes, and as the day progresses, as the players have the opportunity to take on the person they’re designated to play against, they play. The tourney would be one reeaally long process, but players would be able to play in and out of the PC tournaments, which are typically setup to run continuously from start to end. This way as players lose and are messing around they can get to the console rounds, and we don’t have time allocation difficulties.

    Just a thought… whatcha think?

and, for the sake of mentioning it, if there’s need at the next lan my PC has tv capture that runs realtime very well, I could possibly see setting up at the console area next time and as I’m out and about you guys could utilize it as an extra 17″ LCD ‘TV’… but it would not be a reliable tv for the ‘whenever you need it’ kind of use you probably need.

Well Jazzman….people have to let us know if they can bring things…thats why we have a sign up sheet. When you register for the Lan online you are asked if you can bring things (Xbox, or Tv) and then i email those people and ask them to bring their *edited*….so its not that it needs to be better planned…..people need to voice up. im not psychic i cant tell magically if people can bring things or not…..use the sign up sheets…..

Eh, why not just have fun console LANs whenever? I mean, no one uses the system link anymore (assuming that still works cross campus). If not, we can always run stuff over XBC (Xbox Connect. http://www.xbconnect.com I think is the address) and you don’t even have to have Live for that sort of thing. And you can use just an Xbox as well with XBC. You just have to have a switch/hub whatever so that your computer can send information between the network and the Xbox. More details on the site.

As far is the 12 oclock thing goes, we set it up late for a reason. There would be no tournament or free play at at all if people weren’t forced to be there all night and not take off with their tvs. You have to remember that running consoles is new to us and we are still experimenting with what works and doesn’t. Obviously the way we ran it this time did not work. Next time we won’t do the same thing.

We need to do it the same way App. does. They know how to run consoles and how much time it takes for a console tourney to finish. And i can guarantee 1 hour and 30 minutes or 45 minutes is not even close to how much time it will take to run a real tourney. for a good console tourney it will take a few hours…not just one

We’re running 4-5 tournaments. None of them can overlap very much, because we want everyone to be able to play in ALL of them. If you want real tournaments, you’re going to have to pick and choose which.

Well gxti…you cant please everyone and most people dont go to that many diff tournies. they mainly stick to either pc or console. maybe 3-4 people go back and forth…maybe. so if we cant make everyone happy make the people who came for the specific reason on playing consoles to have fun. a tourney that lasts for an hour is not going to fun when you have to cram and have 30 people finish in 5 minutes per rond and then they dont get to play anymore…..thats not fun. if that is the case then why do we have console tournies…seeing as the club doesnt really want to give consoles to time they NEED if they want a tourney. now i can see why there were never consoles at the other lans….

Akuzan, I didn’t mean any offense about the “better planned” remark. Perhaps the better way to word it is that maybe it needs to be more voiced how in need we are of consoles at these events. I, for one, never considered it might be an issue and scrolled right past that part of the registration form…my bad :(

I’m sure more than 4 consoles and TVs could be rounded up if people were harassed about it enough :P

I see no reason why anyone would object to that

No problem akuzan, it was my bad as well.

In all seriousness though, everyone needs to be begged about bringing consoles/tv’s. Hell, I would personally help transport and watch over some equipment if it would help.

Also, something would need to be done to ensure we don’t have that system link trouble we had, but I dunno what- that’s not really my area of expertise.

i dont know that was odd….happens though. i have been in lans and some certain xbox’s dont connect with each other.

The only sure fire way to solve it is to get some internet connection and have all the xbox on xbox live or maybe even the schools lan would work. i know the xbl will work but every xbox needs and account.

What i really want to do it have 8 xbox’s and 8 tv’s so in halo we can have 4v4 teams and if we do 2v2 4 teams can play and for gears everyone will have their own screen and it would just be alot better. now if only we had more time…..

If we can get 8 set up, then running two rounds simultaneously, or even 4 with split-screen would be awesome if it is well-coordinated.

coordination isnt hard…getting all of the things we need and the people for those things will be harder. also gxti, if i tell you ahead of time thwt halo or gears or w/e will be team can you make a slot for that on the registration on the internet? like halo 2 team name section or something….just a thought

I know what to do for the next tourney as in setting up teams and brackets and all

Well, you just need to add a check box and a text field. Something to the effect of.. “Do you have a team for …” Yes or No.

“If yes, what is the team name?”
