Ventrilo Meetings And how to Set it Up

I have gotten alot of questions about when we are going to do our online meetings. So decided to make a forum post to show you guys first how to setup ventrilo on your machine.

Ventrilo is a Voice Over IP program that allows you to talk to people over the internet, and even if you dont have a mic you can just sit in and listen.

How to set it up.

1) GO download ventrilo client version at

http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php

Make sure your downloading the client version for windows

2) install the program, just use the default. and then start the program

3) the first thing you need to do is setup a name for yourself. On the -> arrow next to Username, click there. A new window will appear called “Setup User” click on new as you need to create a new user and enter a name, click ok.

4) Then below, in the phonetic text box enter how you want the name pronounced. In most cases you simply reenter your name identical to how you have it.

5) Description is for your own record, you can enter anything in there. Leave work dir empty and press ok.

Now that your back at the Ventrilo main program.

6) click on the -> arrow next to server. A new window will appear called Connection Editor. Click new and enter a name for the server you wish to connect to.

7) Hostname or IP is just that. For example. vent.teamexforce.com or etc. It can also be an IP Number

8) Port number is almost always left at default. But if you know that your server you want to connect to uses a specific port enter it in there now. Our Vent server uses port 3796

9) If the server your connecting to requires a password enter it in there.

How to setup the functionality of Ventirlo

1) A new window will appear named “Setup” with several options. Start by clicking on Use Push-To-Talk Key.

2) Below that checkbox, just below the play keyclicks checkbox is a Hotkey box. Click on the text box and press the key you wish to have to press to speak to others in the server. This can be almost anything and it will make it so this button your setting has to be pressed in order to speak on the server, kinda like a walkie talkie.

3) Now that you have done that part you can test how you sound. Clicking Test below will enable you to listen to yourself speak. To do so click on Test, and then once activated you simply press the key you defined as Hotkey, speak and then let that key go. After you let go you will hear yourself speak. To get out of this mode simply click the Test button again.

4) If while you heard yourself speak you can fiddle with the incoming and outgoing sliders to “fine tune” how you sound. These effect how you hear others and how others hear you. This is also where you will come to change those settings if someone says your way too loud or way too soft etc.

5) Now at the very top click on Binds, and make sure the checkbox labeled Play binds sent by others is enabled.

6) Now click on the Tab labeled speech and make sure the checkbox labeled Play Text-to-speech binds by others is checked. Just below that is a dropdown box. Make sure it is set to Microsoft Sam as this is the best/clearest to use.

7) Now click ok to finalize the settings.

If you have any issues feel free to post them under this topic. I havent scheduled our meeting by the use of VOIP, but i plan to do a trial one before the lan event to talk about some things.
